I have a small rust bubble, around the size of a 5p piece so I went to Bromley MB to see if my car could be dune under the 8 year rule.

After they measured the paint thickness and took images of the area, I was asked to open the car for them to record the mileage. When I unlocked the car, he said he thinks I have a problem as the sound the alarm made was not of a UK origin car.

Turns out my car was purchased from Netherlands so is not included in the 8 year anti rust guarantee.

They said that I could try taking my claim to MB as they may be sympathetic and will hold onto the details in case they are requested, but they said to not get my hopes up..

Email sent, fingers crossed lol

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
I bet it was manufactured on the same production line as cars first registered in the UK.

Mine was made in Germany as well so Mine wont be covered either. What are the limitations on servicing conditions? do we need to have full MB history?

Hi Mark,
I would be in the same position with my C43, as my car was originally bought in Gibraltar, my alarm also has a tone when locking/unlocking it.
But mine also has an option code in its vin data
"833 VEHICLES FOR GREAT BRITAIN, ADDITIONAL PARTS"
If your car has this code it may help your case with MB as it was then obviously bought for UK use and UK warranties should then apply, I would of thought.
What this additional equipment is god only knows!
MPH speedo maybe?

If you look at the vin data, it should give you on option code relating to the supplying dealer mine was code 551 IIRC which is Gibraltar, there is web site with this info somewhere, but i did,nt save the link.
Failling that any MB dealer should be able to give you this info from your VIN number.

Mark,
Are you looking at a VIN Data card generated by MB or the Russian site? As some more obscure option codes are only visible from the officially generated data card and this maybe the case in your car.

UPDATE

Received an email from them today, saying they were sorry that I am having a bad experience with MB, and that they have opened a case to investigate my problems

Seeing as the Customer Services are in Netherlands, I wonder if that will help my case :)

MB said NO :(

Just had an email back from MB Customer Service. They will not assist in the costs, which MB Bromley say is circa £800 for a very small paint bubble. (less than a 5p coin) They even manage to spell my name wrong lol

Dear Mr Misfud

Mercedes-Benz Model: CLK 320
Chassis No: WDB208465
Thank you for contacting the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center Maastricht N.V.
We have opened an investigation with Mercedes-Benz Bromley with regards to your concerns. The dealership have confirmed that as your vehicle is an imported vehicle, it's warranty period has expired, and there would not be a goodwill contribution forthcoming from the Mercedes-Benz Warranty Department.
The dealership have also confirmed that the estimate of £800.00 to repair the corrosion is subject to the condition of panels underneath when the paint and top corrosion are removed.
We would like to thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns.

Yours sincerely

Sorry to hear this Mark, though i feel sure it will cost substantially less than the £800 mentioned.

yes I am sure it will, and in the position its in, even a rub down and touch up will still look good.

I am not too upset about the result, I bought the car thinking I had no warantee anyway so I have not lost anything. At least I know there is no point in my worrying about keeping it MB Serviced now lol

Wise - a decent indie and bodyshop and ignore Mobilio.
On the flipside, Our 2002 E220 cdi (W211) is in at the moment.
What is really wierd is that the corrosion appeared on the edge of the boot lid, near the hinge. Odd because that panel is supposed to be aluminium.
They've now rung up and said that there is a rust problem on the bonnet (not that we knew about) and they're applying to MB for that too. But the bonnet is aluminum as well ...

All very odd.

First let us be clear that the guarantee is different in the UK from the rest of Europe. They get a two year manufacturers warranty. We get 3 years, with the third year paid for by MB UK.

Second, there is no 8 year rust warranty.

There is the normal new car warranty and there is the 30 year Mobilo Life warranty against rusting from the inside out.

There is however 'goodwill' on which MB have been IMO remarkably good in general. The confusion arises because with goodwill they will normally only look at cars up to about 8 years old. They bear in mind two major factors: -
1). How long you have owned the car (they don't like it if someone buys a rusty car cheap and then expects them to fix it free so they can make a profit on resale) and
2). The service record. Full MB service history is not essential but counts a lot as you would expect. If you have been loyal to them, they try to be loyal to you.

Hi all, hope you are all well. Work and home life (holidays ) have conspired against my efforts to keep up with events on the Forum but things have calmed down now!
So I start back with a good news story.
My wife's car (C220 cdi Sports coupe 02) went in for MOT yesterday and problems with rust on the front arches.
Tony Purslows took documentation and photos and the result is the car goes in Tuesday for 3 days to have the wings painted (car has full MB history and is an import, hence the tone when alarm is armed ).
Also failed MOT on ball joint which they resolved and gave discount on parts and labour as both cars are serviced with them.
MOT is free under their Platinum pack and the car came back washed and hoovered out.
As I said great service and worth the money in my book.
HAGWE.

Good to see someone else pleased with their dealer and another example of the benefits of FMBSH.
