I take delivery of a 500SE next week (will post pictures etc.) To maintain it's rust free conditition I was contemplating using this company. Rubbish website but they are booked up a long way ahead.

http://www.before-n-after.co.uk/

Has anyone used them or a company offering a similar service?

Without a pit/hoist I'm assuming it's a difficult DIY job?

My local garage say they can do it, but is it better left to a specialist?

Thanks
Piers

I had the pick up rustproofed...well we hope so and we're keeping it for its serviceable life so we will know...at Rustmaster, as Malcolm's link above.

Not cheap, but probably similar price to the chap you are trying out.

Pleased with the overall job, he used a light coating of clear waxoyl in the box sections and inside doors/tailgate etc, and a very heavy coat of thick black waxoyl undersealant that doesn't fully dry out on the chassis, suspension, axles and the whole underbody.

Bearing in mind these ladder chassis pick ups are very prone to rust it we think it was worth it.

I thought about using the chap you going to, but his rules and do's and don'ts all seem a bit heavy handed to me so we tried the one we used and we are pleased, but B and F may do a better job, who knows?

We turned up at midday in the week, Mike the boss gave us a lift into St Albans about 5 miles away and we spent an enjoyable afternoon including lunch with one of the family who lives not far away.
Mike collected us at about 5ish pm and we collected our stinking pick up and returned home.

Remember your car will stink of the waxoyl for some weeks, ours was done maybe 6 weeks ago and the smell has almost gone now!!

There will be a hazy coating of waxoyl overspray over the body, i washed the car the next day with very hot water and a strong car wash solution and that removed all the overspray easily albeit with a bit of elbow grease.

I keep the vehicle spotlessy clean underneath which was commented on by the chap that did the job as it was apparently only the second non new car that they have never needed to steam off first..i got a discount for that by the way.

I would do this again and i would use Rustmaster again, i obviously can't comment on the chap you are going with, i usually waxoyl my own vehicles, but yes it is the filthiest job imaginable if you are going to do a good job.

Some people seem to think it's a waste of money as new cars are so good, i'm not so convinced meself, i know which car i'd rather buy used.

Hope you give a report when you've had the job done, we'll be very interested.

If you really want i could link a couple of pics from underneath of the completed job taken a week or two after.

This is the first time i've tried linking pics, so if you end up in Saucy Sarah's home page don't blame me.

Don't think that exhaust will see the 12 years that my 124's lasted, i've painted it with heatproof paint but it's not going to be a long lived example methinks.

not quite a full 2.

You can see why i wanted to have the truck rustproofed from this pic alone.
I'd already wire brushed and painted the calipers and suspension with hammerite black, after seeing this.

For under the car i would definately go black, the clear waxoyl will attract dust etc and will look messy.

Can't answer that yet for this coating, i too shall be continuing my underbody washing regularly during the winter as i do the car, but i also tend to nip through a nearby ford on the way home especially after heavy salting and undertake the washing after a wet spell so the salt never really gets to dry on the underbody, same goes for my car.

It's an experiment all in all really, the truck is serviced meticulously like the car and pampered i suppose, these things are like our cars not cheap and i want this relatively simple vehicle to last many years, the pro waxoyling will hopefully aid that.

Do let us have a report of your experience Roygarth.

I have only ever used the normal waxoil under the car as I have huge stocks of the stuff,,I have always found the the mud does not stick to it very well, so that is a bonus, so you might not have to wash it so often underneath

In the end got my local independent garage to do it. He pressure washed underneath and then used clear Waxoyl. It looks like he has been very thorough (he is on other work he does for me.) Cost was £44 for Waxoyl and £130 for labour (inc. VAT). So £174 all in which I think is reasonable.

When heated tp 20c or more it is very easy to apply Waxoil with an old spray gun,,and that is what I use. if you must high pressure wash after doing this do not hold the lance too close so as to force the waxoil off. Dirt does not stick that well to waxoil anyway and it soon cleans up. area's that take a hammering are easy to re do and a little dirt does not matter

They are called BC&R in Fakenham on 01328 863108. Ask for Shane and request he do the work himself. Mention me, Piers, and they'll 'look after you'.
