I am looking at buying a 2000 C200 elegance estate (91k miles)which is generally very good except for the osr arch which is badly rusted. The owner assures me that it is covered by MBZ and that following a phone call today to his local dealership, they confirmed that to be correct! Am I being unfairly suspicious of the seller or do MBZ honour all such body/rust problems under the 30 year warranty? I would have thought that would only apply to cars that have been fully cared for and inspected by MBZ. I know this era of car have a history of rust problems and have been told by others to steer clear but I like`em and am determined to find a good one, preferably a c240.

Any thoughts or advise re the rust?

Thanks. Nick

I wouldn't have thought it was covered as it's over 8 years old. If it is covered, why didn't the owner have it repaired?

Helen is right. Normally your car would be exempt. They do make exceptions from time to time though, for loyal dealer customers.
I'd buy it on the proviso that he gets written approval for the repairs first, as whilst they may approve him, they will almost certainly tell you, as a new owner with no history with them, to go away.

I would walk away from this one anyway, once they have rusted, it can come back

Ask yourself this: - if it is true that MB would fix it free for the existing owner why hasn't he had it done before selling, as he would then have got a better price?

I've been there - as the vendor. The approval to repair is not transferable. If you buy the car, MB will not consider authorizing the repair until you have owned the car for at least 6 months ( a move introduced to prevent people buying a rusty car, having it fixed for free by MB and selling it on).

As television said, once they have rusted, they are likely to rust again.

I traded mine for a "pre-registered" car and the trade in from the dealer could not have been better. I think the chap who bought it at auction did an excellent job valeting and the car was perfect mechanically, so there is still a market in these, if you go into it with your eyes open and understand the issues.

as some one said on the forum, the 30 year rust warranty started after oct24 1998, so you are covered.
