Well, better than rust.
I always accepted a rattle can spray job would not produce a good colour match, so wasn't disappointed.

Always difficult to get a decent picture of a inner wheel arch due to the contrast issue - If you can get a willing volunteer to hold some cardboard or a sheet on the outside of the wing you can get a better image :)

As they say "you are never to old to learn"
I have done paint work for years as a hobby, used spray guns and compressors in the past, last couple of decades just rattle cans. However, i have always fancied having an airbrush to do small jobs, and blend in paint that is not quite the right colour.
So, have taken the plunge and bought myself a kit. Its not as easy as i first thought, going to practise on sheets of plastic before having a go on the car.
Wish me luck

ok, at the moment, not doing very well with practise, its harder than i thought to get it right (using some old plastic trims to practise on, not the car !!!)
Paint is going on very rough, thought i had pressure too high, it made it better, but still not good enough. Clear coat was going on very well, so i think its the silver i am using from an aerosol can, have now ordered some paint i can mix myself (spraying paint into a cap, then pouring into airbrush)
I have also ordered an air brush with a trigger rather than the button on top, as feel this will be better.
I will not have a go at the car until i am getting consistent results with the practise. I will post, but do not know how long that will be, as need warm weather and still conditions ( i do not have a garage).

Ok, did some practise today and quite pleased with results. Pictures dont do justice. Top trim I painted all of it, bottom trim just the ends and tried to blend it in.
I am happy enough to have a go at car soon.

These are the air brushes I have been trying. Both do a decent job but I prefer the bottom one as I find the trigger easier to use than the button on top type.
What have I learnt, well, getting a decent result is not easy, you have to remember that the airbrush sprays a circle of paint, unlike a full blown spray gun which sprays paint in a line.you also have to forget all you know about using a spray gun or rattle cans. Airbrush needs to be 2 to 3 inches from surface and move very slowly to get the paint on wet. Also, paint mix is important, seems 50/50 is about right.
I will post again when I do the car.

Try painting glass.
Bottles, glazing anything glass, good to practice on and there's a lot of it about.

Just to update, not posted any pictures of results with airbrush. The finish on the arches was good, no problem, however, i found a little more rust on the bottom front of the passenger side wing. It was one of those spots of rust that when you started attacking it, it just keep going, so the repair has ended up much too big for an airbrush, and i have had to resort to rattle cans. Got it all done yesterday except for clear coat, put one coat on and the heavens opened, coat was not dry, so its bloomed. so not a good job and have to do it again. Only issue is, to do it again just makes the repair bigger !!!!
Glad its not a new car !
