By the position of it, it looks like one of the rams to lift the boot during roof operation.

Item circled. Gas spring to assist the hydraulic ram on the opposite side (not shown).
Drivers side is gas spring, passenger side is hydraulic ram.

2004 has the later Comand with the bigger screen. Different software.

Unless it's an early 2004 like mine which has the smaller screen.
