Hello all

I was looking in my boot (R230 SL 500 2002), and saw this clearly rusted pneumatic cylinder... does anyone know what it’s for?

it’s directly behind the auxiliary battery adjacent to the rear light.

If you have Command it's set automatically from the GPS.
Unfortunately the GPS system operates on something called an epoch and when the epoch rolls over the GPS gets the date and time wrong.
Nothing you can do to fix it, however if it's an hour out try selecting another time zone to put the displayed time correct (date will still be miles out).
I dont suppose you know what this rusty pneumatic cylinder does directly behind the light cluster on the auxiliary battery side of my boot do you? It’s a 2003 r230 sl500.
Thanks in advance

That's a boot lift assister for hinging the boot open to stow the roof.

How come the clock is correct on my 230 Alistair, will it cease to function soon ? It's a 2004 car.

Just curious.

As LK said in the other thread, it's a strut to assist in the roof raising process. Is there a problem with it ?

Are there any pitfalls to replacing one or is it simply pop the clips and replace? Thanks for the info by the way

I cannot. Will have a proper look at the weekend.
Is it causing a problem?
Rust won't form on the internal bit I wouldn't think. You can check by operating the roof and stopping it as the boot lid gets to the full open position.

No it works perfectly, but the cylinder has clearly perished. If it’s simple I’ll do it myself... I don’t sleep if I think something is wrong with her

If there is one on the other side i would be inclined to replace both at the same time to ensure same/equal operation pressure.

The other side is an hydraulic ram operated by the roof pump.

I've just been all over this area as you can see my upper pivot pin detached from the frame. Since been welded back on.
