HI all

I have just noticed a very rusty rear brake pipe (it was an advisory on last MOT - done before I bought the car).

Is it ok to brush the rust off and paint with something like Hammerite, or will this 'eat' in to the pipe and shorten its life???

thanks

if its very rusty, id advise having a replacement made out of copper! the copper pipe wont rust and will be much less likely to burst than a badly corroded steel one! if you were to brush the rust off, the mot manual (when i used to work in testing stations) that any pitting more than10% of the thickness of the metal the pipe was made from should be failed. in reality this rarely happens and common sense is used. imagine how shallow the pitting needs to be to 'officially' fail an mot? the pipes are made from metal 0.6mm thick! that means any pitting more than 0.06mm is a failure! ie almost every steel pipe on the road!
