I am considering buying a replacement for my current W222 S350D and looking at one that is 2019, full MB history around 82% battery health mileage 73k
Any feedback on general daily use pro's cons etc will be most helpful. I do around 20k per year 70% motorway with the rest local shops 15-25mile return journeys.
I can get a charger installed on the drive if needed.
Thanks

Interested to follow this thread as the owner of an 'ancient' but immaculate 21-year-old 150k mile W220 S320L cdi who has resisted upgrading to newer models (e.g. W221 or W222) for various reasons.

Can I ask, what's your rationale for choosing the S500 over the S560e?

My original plan was to replace my W222 F/L 350D premium exec with a higher spec version which has the improved sound system and massage seat plus any additional extras added in the new spec. I was originally going to stick with a diesel as mine had been fine for 15 months and 23k miles. Over the last couple of months I got to know every W222 in my price range on the market, there were a few petrol models which I did start looking at even moreso now there is a 30p per litre price difference between diesel and petrol. I had one W222 S450 inspected at a dealer in Tavistock, only to find out that the offside was painted poorly, logged current fault codes, so I walked away. Another one that looked absolutely mint at a dealer in Kings Langley turned out to have a cracked rim and both front spring links with excessive play upon local inspection - this despite "passing" an MOT the day before! The dealer disagreed with the suspension issues and was not willing to replace the cracked alloy, so I didn't proceed. I did see an S560e and considered that for a few days and decided against for a number of reasons - the extra weight would probably cause more wear on tyres, suspension and generally not ideal for motorway cruising efficiency, battery replacement cost eventually and resale value if possible to re-sell after 3-4 years, plus not much feedback on reliability either way.
After my dealings with the last 2 independent dealers I decided the only way to buy a decent example was to go via MB Approved used. I found a decent S500 top spec, good colour with a non black interior. Well over what I planned to spend but as I'm planning on retirement in the next 2-4 yrs I thought why not!

The sales staff @MB Bath have been really accommodating to all my requests, even knocked a couple of grand off the price after a bit of haggling. The car had arrived with them last Thursday and I bought it on Monday after seeing variuous videos, pictures etc. It went in the workshop yesterday and had both front spring links replaced as one was starting to play, a new starter battery and a few niggles with door controllers and ambient lighting to be sorted, as wll as an A service which was due this month.

I hope to take delivery this week as I cannot attend to collect. Comes with there 1 year warranty, breakdown, etc...

The more you spend on a car the more it makes sense to buy from a MB franchise, you have a bullet proof 1 year warranty or as in my case 2 years with the additional AMG warranty. I’ve owned four E class estates the first three from traders and they all had ‘known’ issues ie the trader knew they existed…

Yep - the 2 dealers I dealt with probably knew about issues with their vehicles. The whole experience with MB has been great so far.

Also, another reason for petrol is to avoid any potential adblue issues and also the petrol versions have normal A/C refrigerant - R1234 and not R744, for which the compressor cost £4k to replace.

It makes me wonder if older / more established & reliable technology is better in the long run?
