Hello

My brother has an S class 500 limo with Comand. He has a Kenwood KDV C82C dvd multichanger mounted in the boot which can play either 6 or 10 (not sure which) dvd's. He has the optional extra screen in the back so the dvd's can be watched while the car's travelling. It also has a tv tuner.

BUT - he didn't get the instructions for the player when he bought the car so we can't work out how to make the thing play dvd's.

Anyone out there got a setup like this and can you post how to work it? (He does have a tv-like remote for it but we still can't get it to work!)

We've downloaded a manual but still we can't get it work. We're beginning it think it might be a faulty magic eye stopping the remote from connecting with the small sensor that is fitted on the fascia by the side of the Comand unit.

Were these players an authorised MB option? As it is obviously designed to work through Comand and has been professionally fitted, we think it was fitted by either the factory or a dealer at the time of delivery.

If anyone can help or comment we'd be very grateful. Thanks, Russ.

OK so I might not have the exact DVD multichanger, but its too damn cold at the moment to go outside to the garage and check what model mine is. Bearing that in mind what follows may be complete rubbish. I'll go out in due course and have a play.

1. Has the Comand got the facility to insert a disc in the head unit itself...? Try it and see if you can get the front & rear screens to work and report back. I'm not convinced the the multiplayer can play DVDs throught the head unit, even though its a DVD one. Comand may not be set up that way.

2. the remote has a selector button for front & rear - make sure you're in the right mode.

3. I presume your remote has the wheel thingy at the top...? you select things by pushing this wheel inwards, not by pressing OK as I was doing before reading the manual.

4. took me a while on this one too before reading the manual as the rear screen looks sooooo inviting, but its NOT a touch screen lol ;-)

5. make sure the DVDs are of the right region.

Sorry if this is all too basic but it's worth checking the groundwork with you first before jumping to fault-based conclusions.

Rich

Thanks Rich.

The Comand unit can and does play dvd's through its single slot (as does the TV). The display ends when the car gets to 5 or 10 mph.

Yes, the dvd (and TV) from the Comand unit can be played through the rear screen and it is not speed sensitive.

I'm not sure about the mode point you make - he's gone back to Wales this AM so I can't now check but i can pass this point on. This might be the obvious simple solution!!

Yes, the remote does have a mouse-type wheel and when in TV mode, you use this to cycle through the channels. We actually have 2 remotes - a MB one that has the wheel thingy and a Kenwood one.

The rear screen does indeed lack any buttons! Took me a while playing with the on/off and headphone buttons before brother said try the remote!

All his dvd's are either region 2 or multi's.

On thinking further about this whole problem, I don't no think it is the sensor. If it was, how would we be able to control the rear screen at all?

I think it's more likely to be a break in the connections between the Comand unit (where I assume the sensor routes to) and the multi changer. We know the changer receives power because it loaded the dvd's and whirrs quite normally when this is done.

I'll bet there's a break in that part of the wiring that runs from Comand to the unit and carries the instructions to change/play dvd's. After all, Comand can play and display in the rear from a dvd loaded in it's own slot so the circuitry to do this must be OK. We're then left with power to the changer being OK but the instruction circuitry faulty. We've also checked that there's no connector plugs loose on the changer.

We're assuming that whoever had the changer fitted must have had it working at some time in the past so it should be able to play through Comand. Unless (as you might be thinking) it's designed to played without Comand's involvement at all. But how does it do this???

ICE eh!

Any further help or advice would be most welcome!

Thanks, Russ

The mode button is on the side of the remote, and it just toggles between front and rear control. Sounds as if it's working correctly anyway.

Does the changer play CDs alright...?

I'm just not convinced the logic in Comand will play DVDs unless they're in the single slot at the front.
On mine,
1. if you want to play a CD you have 2 options that you need to choose between on the screen - single CD, or Multi CD.
2. if you want to play a DVD you just have one DVD selection. I don't get a choice to decide between single or multi - it just plays.

Maybe you need to try selecting AUX, as it may be wired in to that option.

Thanks again Rich!

You may have a point about the Aux. I noticed that the rear screen has tabs for Aux, Aux1 and AUX2. Maybe we need to toggle to select whichever one the dvd changer is set to use - if it is set to use one!

I don't know if the Kenwood plays cd's - brother hasn't tried since he has an cd changer as well - I think in the glove box but I may be wrong.

I think I'll advise him to try his local MB dealer and if they can't help, try an in-car audio specialist with Kenwood knowledge. There must be a way around this as I said before, the person who had it fitted must have sussed it out.

Thanks for your help though.

Cheers, Russ.

Is it not possible to contact the previous owner for tips on how this unit should work, and if it was working correctly when he passed the car on?

Thanks Dave - not a bad idea and if all else fails, I suspect that's what we'll do.

Thanks to all, Russ.
