I have been told this morning the there is a software error on the Command in the new S class in that it is 40 miles out when changing from East to West of Grenwich. As my friend said that not many people would pick up on this unless you were a Pilot. He has started a rumpus with MB in Germany and Holland now threatening court action, after 8 weeks they are now writing new software.

So BRP this effects you as it is the same on all S class, I cant speak for other models

Not tested in that location but there is definitely something wrong at Madrid when driving North. There are a few new roads but the sat. nav is definitely confused and unable to select the route towards Burgos (the only sensible route) This has happened on several occasions in the S class but previously my 06 range rover picked out the route with ease.(about the only thing it did do correctly!) In the S class when using TMC and the dynamic route setting all I have found is a list of roadworks and delays on several routes and it is a bit fiddly without stopping. Previously the range rover sat. nav. automatically announced that "an improved route" had been found giving the option of accepting or rejection, when dynamic route selected. Because of this I tend to just set "fastest route" and take my luck with delays.
As I understand the S class information is contained on a hard drive updates should be easy?

You see BRP I think of you all of the time, when this mod comes through I will post it for you. It took 36 phone calls around the world, when given the last warning they said yes, they will do it. My friend gets what he wants and what he has paid for

Thank you Malcolm. If the error is mainly noticed by a pilot do we look for an airliner with an s class strapped underneath it flying around London testing the sat. nav. !

Alternatively there is a no frills airline with a 2nd hand Comand system bough off ebay in Lithuania....

Not really, he has been flying all of his life and he knows the exact bearings where ever he is, I suppose you could always unplug it and the next time you are flying somewhere ask the pilot to check the calibration.

I notice that the altitude on command is measured in yards, and wondered why. I am familiar with feet and meters being used but have not seen yards used before. Following Malcolm's post I guess owners will be trying to park near 'trig' points and measuring to test the MB co-ordinate information.

Being serious for a nano second if you have a handheld or plug in GPS you could always test the Comand against it. My Garmin 2610 & 2620 are particularly accurate.

My command has been checked against my Navman and no problem there.

Also on a serious note, I gave this info to take this forum to new heights telling people that they have a problem that they did not know they had, and you cant have better information than that:rolleyes:

Malcolm I appreciate the notice of this error with command, the other comments are nothing other than light hearted banter and are not intented o reduce the value of your original information at all.

My car is having 1st service tomorrow (reached about 18000)) so I may say that I have noticed a bit of inaccuracy around Greenwich and could they re-write the software as it is a common problem. For once they will be right when they say "they are all like that"

the car in question needed to go west as far as Oxford before it shows a westerly heading, so do tell them, also that an update will be coming, its a nice smug feeling to be one step ahead.

Of course they know nothing of this problem but have mentioned the forthcoming update. They have a new Mclaren SLR in the showroom today. I have mixed feelings about the doors and the £333 k price tag. It is LHD also, which I suppose would be ok for me.

At least the info puts you in good standing with the dealer.

The reason my friend phoned was to tell me that he had just flown two people out to Italy to the Ferrari factory to pick up 2 cars and he went around the whole plant. The difference to the MB factory is that everything is done in house, where as with MB all of the components are brought in. With all of these fancy cars they spend at least 4 months of the year being repaired, so no more complaints from MB owners, apart from Omni.

Always in good standing with dealer (they want another sale!) Regarding Ferrari, I have owned two in the past (pay school fees in stead now) I never had one moment of bother with either I reckon engines and gearboxes are un-burstable II had nothing but enjoyment with them. I am talking a good while ago when perhaps they were not as electronically complicated as today. I never visited the factory although it was an option when buying a new car partly for owners who wanted to be the sole driver of the vehicle, something which was of no concern to me. I may have been lucky because I do recall when I first enquired about Ferrari ownership at Huddersfield Motors (Merc dealer also) following declaring what my annual mileage would be I was openly discouraged, they said people buy these and wrap them in cotton wool, I had to use mine for work!

I think that the cars gone by are less fussy than todays, Back in the 70's I was in the Masserati factory in Moderna and on wandering around I looked through a gap in two doors to the cellar below, and it was full of mangled wrecks,at leasst 100. A man pulled me away saying that it is not good if owners look in there. Maybe he was right as I never forgot that sight.
