Just had 1st service carried out and checked oil level when the car had been sdtyanding for about 2 hours (still hot) it records just above half way between the two marks. The invoice shows oil supplied as 8.4 l I checked the level as a precaution as it is the first service carried for me by the dealer as I am a virgin Mercedes-Benz owner. I discussed the issue with the service manager and was told that this is normal as fully synthetic oil expands greatly when hot and that is the level they always fill to. I am not sure what the full capacity is and wonder if this is normal. I guess I am a bit suspicious as when it was taken in the oil level was just about 1/3rd of way up between marks (ie adding 1litre would show todays reading) The oil was not black by any means but once driven it is difficult to know. In the service book it describes the oil used as LO ASH whatever that is. Any help appreciated.

Some oils do foam when running, gearboxes and axles, I have read somewhere how synthetic oils behave, is it more or less foaming over mineral.

Thanks Malcolm, perhaps I am too suspicious they seem to be professional but it is the human element. Following a new screen they set the camera with the car a few inches above floor level using a target of fixed length. The image produced a cut off. When I returned they said that just for my benefit they would re-calibrate and I could watch through the MOT window. As soon as I saw their method I banged on the window and when they set up with both car and target on the floor a perfect image was produced.

I am doing better than you now, they let me go in with the car, they said it is easier that way.

That is because of your knowledge. I know very little about cars (apart from paying to run them) But I am familiar with levels etc. from using surveying instruments and to me it vwas obvious that the fixed height target should be on the same level as the car. A bad day when a thick civil engineer can help fix the car. Also in the showroom was an AMG 6.3 S class and I notice the camera installation is different.

The low ash oil has been produced to help get diesels though the latest emissions tests. BTW what mileage are you at?

Also have you noticed in your service booklet that you will get the ATF changed at 40K miles, valid for 5G & 7G boxes.

The service was carried out at 17479 the indicator showed another 500 was available. The dealer gave me (FOC) 1 litre of 0W/40 Mobil 1 some time ago for topping up which has not been needed as yet. I presume this would mix with LOASH oil if I use it in the future. Thanks for tip re: ATF will watch out for that (shouldn't be too long at this rate)
