I have a late 2006 E Class 280cdi elegance estate with 125,000 miles.

The back end is stuck at its fullest height after it had passed over a series of speed bumps whilst lightly laden.
No amount of coaxing will return it to normal height. It is jacked up at a comic angle and the tyres leave the road surface when hitting the slightest imperfection on the road surface. top speed is now 10 mph . It's like driving a very large Space Hopper.
I've tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery and it is not safe to drive to my preferred MB specialist 20 miles away. Hence the need to consult the knowledgable members of this forum.

am I going to have to cancel the family holiday to pay for some new Sach dampers or is there a method of resetting it that Daimler Benz would prefer I didn't know about ?
Usual Regards
Benjit.

Does it have airmatic (controlled by a switch near the gearstick?)

There is a rear axle sensor which is prone to snapping and it has probably broken and got stuck in the up position.

It is located just above the diff

Richard, thank you for the early reply.,

it is standard self levelling , no switch and did ride fairly well for a large estate.

But I am now going to wait for day light and look for that sensor outlined by Willow.

usual regards

Rear axle sensor replaced

Indeed it was. the flimsy plastic link is now replaced with a more durable metal one- which required a new sensor. Around £200 fitted as I did not like the thought of
a, getting very wet grovelling underneath.
b,the thought of inadvertently reactivating the self levelling down to its normal slender clearance by my unskilled probings thereby crushing my ample person in the process.

Many thanks
Benjit.
