Re the warranty unless you absolutely need the car for work I’d put the £70pm in the bank, Nox sensors are the most likely failure and can be expensive. My sons 16 plate W213 is currently on 50k miles and hasn’t needed anything other than servicing, great cars by the way and very tempted myself the 220d being the best value out there, well worth paying the extra for a well specced car as he did. It will be interesting to see how long he keeps this one he is already concerned about changing in case what he swaps to isn’t as good - says it all really

Would you recommend getting warranty for the car... With audi I was in two minds and then ended up saving in Audi pot instead of buying warranties.. worked out ok as I only needed to change one sensor over 75k miles of use - other than the regular wearables

I would do a "Mercedes pot" and take it from there, if you put the warranty money in there each year you will have a good savings account when you sell.

As the car is 3 years old you have no issues using an indy to service and maintain, don't know where you are but if we know we can recommend one.

The software update is voluntary so make sure they don't apply it when it is being serviced

There will be an E220d Premium Plus with Drivers Assistance Pack for sale at Stratford MB in about 5 weeks time. 48k miles, 3 services completed.should be under £22k I would expect.

Thanks for that... I'm in North Herts... Have heard good things about Prestige of Letchworth so was thinking of giving them a try... Any other good names in Hertfordshire in general or in the Reading area will be gratefully received :)

It means it will have had the latest software update which from threads on the forum means reduced fuel economy :(
I believe that the emissions software update is not applicable to the OM654 2 litre engine in the current E class. Mine has never engaged 9th at 70mph, but as it is only turning over at about 1500 rpm in 8th at that speed I don't find that particularly surprising.

Mine did... used to sit at 1,250 revs at 70 in 9th

Hey OP! I bought an S213 not long ago and it's a great car :) Mine had 34k when I bought it and for £30 road-tax ... it's a steal!

Few extra items to check ...

1. Check all the lighting! I mean under mirror, doors, interior etc. They can be expensive to replace and will annoy you if it's not right!
2. Keep an eye out for Brake judder ... lots of reports for judder on this model around this age.
3. Look at this forum of service bulletins and ask a local Mercedes dealer for a VIN check of historical work and any outstanding items. It may give you some of the bits to look at (mine had the door strip issue + creaking passenger chair)
4. Auto start/stop ... it is often for the batteries to be replaced after three years as they don't produce voltage required anymore (Mercedes quoted £386 for me :O But I'm not in a rush. Mercedes ME apps say starter battery charged )
5. Can the dealer fill the tank for you when you pick it up? Easy way to get £80 bonus ;)
6. MAKE SURE THEY CAN UPDATE THE DIGITAL SERVICE BOOK IF THEY SERVICE IT. This will keep a good history of your car.
7. Window wiper tests, headlight tests etc.

I may think of more and will let you know! Good luck! :)

For a similar price to that ... I would be looking at the BMW 5 series estate as a comparison. I do prefer the handling and fun drive in these, however, nothing beats the Mercedes gliding along the Motorway :D Currently getting avg. 47 mpg on the AMG 220d estate. That is a mixture of motorway and local roads. I got 52 mpg with the cruise set at 70 + 10 en-route back from Birmingham today!

Great checklist, thanks.. I'll tick them off one by one...

Tried 5 series estate and it was surprisingly comfortable to drive, I was expecting more road noise like the previous model used to generate but the 17/18 reg cars are very refined...

Facing the same issue there... Hardly any used 5 series available with adaptive cruise control and auto dipping lights.. they are cheaper and once in the cabin is a nice place to be too... But didn't quite put a smile on my face like sitting in the e class cabin did

No problems! Yeah ... the dealer I got mine from tried to service it themselves and never really deal with Mercedes. Anyway, they ended up putting a tad too much oil in it ... as soon as I got home ... straight into indie specialist who did a full B service and I claimed it back. I think the key is to find out if they can update the digital service book... this keeps a good record against your VIN.

Yes, the puddle light on the passenger side was blown (major issue with these - I believe they updated the part). Found out last week that the drivers side had also been done under warranty!

Rattles ... I have a rattle behind the digital cockpit and I’m going to just have to live with it now...

I’ve got the adaptive cruise on mine however, I must say that I’m shocked at how much I don’t use it. I was looking forward to having it but I find my eyes can read the road better than it thus I rarely use it. I wouldn’t be fussed now if I didn’t have it.

Best spec on the car for me is the Premium plus package, full digital dash and 360 cameras!

Yeah I am agreeing with you on the 5 series. I fell in love with the new 3 series however, estate hasn’t been released for that long therefore the E class it was! Cabin is gorgeous and the car is so comfy on the E!

If I were to buy again ... I’d deffo get one from main dealer as approved used. This way I know my juddering brakes, starter battery, mirror light and rattle in dash would all be taken care of under warranty! Patience ... as there will be more out there - setup an alert on your phone?

Uneven wear on all the 4 tyres, inside of all the tyres close to legal limit as per mot advisories, is missing 3rd service.. I don't understand why people don't spend 200 quid on servicing a car that they paid near enough 40k for not that long ago... Private seller don't know/won't share any info regarding how much life left on brake pads other than they're fine... My suspicion was that car may have been driven hard for only the insides of the tyres to go at 20k and this behaviour may have had adverse effect on the brake discs, pads. Also no guarantees at all due to private sale.. so decided against making b the 3-4 hour journey to view it..

Good point.... There is one available at mb poole... But it's black outside and chrome finish inside... I prefer them white outside and black open pore wood finish inside... But leaving that aside, 12month warranty from mb should give a lot of piece of mind against all the hidden gremlins..

Yes, it's a 66 plate so £30 road tax.

Reading your above, the downside is it is black with metallic trim, but finding wood trim is REALLY difficult! There was a complete set for sale on eBay a few weeks ago for around £350 if you really don't like the metal finish.
