I have a 2001 S320 that has an ESP and BAS warning on the dash.
Replacement of the parking switch normally fixes this in most cases, I have had that done but it has not cured the problem.

It has now been on the Star diagnostics at a specialist and he tell me it has a canbus error and it may be down to a fault with the gear selector switch or the ignition switch??

Seems very odd...Not sure where to go from here??

I cannot believe this, does the guy know how to use STAR

I think more a BAS fault only as ESP cannot work without BAS

He did not seem to want to investigate it any further, maybe he just wants the easy jobs??

I sometimes get the parking sensors flick on and a beep when coming to a stop at a junction, may this be related?

The Esp & Bas error is intermittent and does not show all the time.

There must be a BAS fault code logged, like brake travel sensor

OK the EIS is the master of the CAN, but so many things and never I think the EIS. OK it could be a CAN fault, but you need to go to the CAN circuits to see what is going on.

I do think that he did not wants the job, there has to be a fault listed, that is the thing

Is this switch a common cause of this error then? I have had it 4 times in a week but twice today I assume the switch is under the dash, above the parking brake? Thanks

The parking brake switch can do this, and cheap to try but there are other things

I think a better indie with STAR, these things are not that easy without a direct code.

It's my first post, so bear with me....

I had a very similar fault on my 1998 E320 - BAS and ASP warnings, followed by other seemingly unrelated faults. I replaced the battery - no more warnings. A failing battery can affect the electronics. May be worth a try if you haven't replaced the it recently.
