S320 Dashboard lights and backlight stopped working

My 2002 S320 Diesel developed a fault yesterday on the way back from the airport, having been stood for a week.

Firstly, the backlight on the dashboard went, then about 10 mins later so did all the dials, indicators and everything else on the dashboard.

All other electrics appear to be working, including outside lights/indicators.
Does anyone know the likely cause and solution?

I have tried fiddling with the dimmer switch but no luck.

Some say that you can get them replaced by MB but not in this country

www.actronics.co.uk will repair them for £127 plus VAT

I'd take it into a dealer as this is a safety issue so MB do replace them.

I wonder what VOSA would say about that. Perhaps the threat of litigation in court would do the trick..

The USA rules were used but it did not work,,no harm in trying again

Actually there was a recall on these a while back and MB replaced the cluster on my S320. See here:

After some further investigation with a Merc dealer it's good news, as my model was subject to a recall.

Good news,, so pleased that I was wrong,,I wonder if the safety grounds are the reason now or if the rules have changed
