Just got a 2000 plate S430 and as I drive there is a humming noise coming from the left side of the car which runs in time with the engine revs.
It sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine area but hard to tell as you have to drive it to hear it and goes away the higher the revs climb.
At first I thought it was a blowing manifold but you cannot seem to hear it with the bonnet open and stationary. Any pointers on this one

I would say check the engine mounts, the time is about right to fail.

Sorry for the delay as mentioned been on nights the car does have ABC sport.
What and where is the pulsation damper and how do I check it?

Is there an easy way of telling if it is airmatic as I do not have the switch with the shock absorber picture?

Thanks for the input on this and hopefully I will not have to ask too many more questions lol.

If you have an ABC sport button then you have ABC, rather than airmatic.

The damper is located on the underside right of the car, and is a black sphere looking think like this:

Not sure of any way to test if, its the noise dissapears after 2500 ish rpm then its likely that, it will do it in neutral as well as drive etc.

Thanks for the great picture very self explanatory, is there any way of overhauling the damper or is it direct replacement?

I have been Googling the damper and noise and some mention a pump and replacement seals etc is this a similar set up?

Also what are the other parts highlighted just for reference?

Once again thanks and apologies for so many questions:)

The noise can be determined by putting a stethoscope to the abc pipes.

Right I have been under the car listening.

One of the pipes coming from the unit in the picture then heading into the sill is definitely humming and also a tapping noise.

Whilst there I checked the other pipes and one of the pipes that goes from the valve block thing under the left headlight and into the sill is also humming and tapping.

I also listened to the pump and it's pipes and all appeared fine.

Does this shed any more light on what is at fault?

If its the same humming noise you hear inside the cabin then its most certainly at fault.

The part isnt too expensive and is quick to change, so cheap on labour too. If it looks original (collar all rusted etc) then I would change it either way.

Just to make sure we are on the same wavelength do you mean change the part in the picture (a)

Labour is not a problem as I do it myself

Thats the one, make sure you support the housing as its rubber mounted onto a heatshield and will twist if you dont.

Part no A2203270215

All wheels should also be off the ground, or the system bled of pressure I think.

You will loose a bit of fluid but not a huge amount.

Priced one up at the local Merc garage and it is £117 so will get one and change it but unfortunately I have a battery drain problem to sort first. Never ending.
