Go to a breaker and buy a passenger seat, remove the seat cover on both and fit the foam on your cars drivers seat.

If you want you can buy all the parts necessary to rebuild your seat correctly from MB. Then all you need is someone decent to fit them and make sure they don't use their "own" parts.

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.450&CT=F&cat=15T&SID=91&SGR=060&SGN=01

Above is a picture of the seat and the parts you can order. Have a surf around the site to make sure you got the right part numbers.

MB used to sell foam blocks to put under the springs in the seat base which is cheaper than buying a new spring box and having it fitted.

Regards to all,

Thanks very much !

So is it the spring box that collapses or is it the padding ?
Are the spring bases all the same - I noted slightly different part numbers when I looked in the "famous" RU part catalogue ?
Are the bases and padding "handed" - left and right the same ?

I do not think that the foam is handed. I find that part 14 is something added, only on some seats and fabric.

Is the free height at the front edge the same on both seats.

Can you raise the seats and have someone sit in them and feel underneath for a sagging spring structure, by comparing both sides

Good thinking TV.

It is only the rear part of the seat that is a problem. I was thinking of buying some MB foam blocks (124 910 16 75) which my dealer reckons are available in Germany (£5.30 + VAT) has anyone tried these ?
Any idea how much the breakers charge for a spring frame ?

Too hard to say, but a tatty passenger seat from a breaker would not cost much

Maybe start by investing 5.30 + VAT and if it does not work you have not lost a lot. I am pretty sure they will work as designed though, and may just be the nice cheap answer to the problem. Only wish I had taken this advice....

Spring Base

Whilst I realise the external appearance of W124 seats differ are they all the same "underneath" i.e. will a saloon/estate car passenger base fit into my cabriolet driver's seat ?

If you check the part numbers they are different between saloon/estate and coupe.

From my understanding it is the spring base that normally gives problems.

Check the part numbers carefully and go for one that is as close a match to your current one if you get a second hand one.

Still, I think the foam blocks MB sell to fix this problem are a very good start, and if this is not the answer to your problem then maybe go for a new spring base as a second hand one may suffer from the same problem in a short space of time. Depends how long you intend to keep the car I guess.

Regards, W.

Does the foam simply fit under the seat, or is it a matter of removing the upholstery & fitting the block inside the seat? Thanks.
