I know others have experienced similar problems of vibration at 65 and over. Had wheels balanced 3 times and its still there. I been advised it could be a) Steering damper b) Propshaft, c) Idlergear on Steering
anyone throw any further light, as I dont want to try this and then try that, too costly
Regards

unless someone experianced actualy looks at your car its near impossible to give you a garanteed answer as to your problem as it could be many things, have you had the rear wheels ballanced many people never think its that im thinking in terms of that because the problem only happens at higher speeds and it has happend to me in the past, many people only get the front wheels ballanced because the steering is effected at lower speeds

I have had a similar problem in my old E280 and more recently in my C280.....both had the steering damper replaced....its a known weak spot on these cars. Its cheap and easy to replace.

As well as replacing the steering damper on the c280 I also had all 4 wheels realigned and its now real smoooth!.....prior to that it had a real nastly wheel wobble at 60-85mph.

Not sure where you are in the country, but if you are anywhere around the Berks/Hants area, I can recommed a good place to get your wheels re-aligned at a very competitive price.

mjtray, could let me know where to get the wheel alignment. I've had a new steering damper and all four wheels balanced but the problem still exsists. If it give any indication I feel the vibration most through my calves.

". On some Mercs the wheel centres do not accurately fit the hubs. For real!!!
(Vito and A class for example). The wheels are then supposed (I guess) to centre themselves when the bolts are done up. That just does not happen, especially if the wheels are tightend on the ground per driver's manual.

The wheel centres themselves (not the hubs) have high spots next to each wheel stud hole to get the exact required diameter. That is normal for a properly fitting wheel to help with removal/fitting. It's completely unnecessary on these "dud" wheels which have .3mm clearance around the whole hub centre which can translate to .6mm" on one side and zilch on the other.

That is a built in out of round and imbalance you might get from a 2 bit salesman.....which can only partly be got rid of by "on car" balancing of the out-of-round assembly.

On most (all) cars of integrity (exclude M-B here!) the wheel centre clearance should be very close to zero. Cure for an M-B with bean-counter inspired (cost cutting) wheels is a .3mm shim pushed into the hub centre when the wheel is on but slightly loose....slowly turn the wheel while fitting to help get the shim in place.

Wheel "ovality" cured and the vibration vanishes provided the wheels are balanced on a balancer which really does centre the wheel......If the balancer comes from M-B it may suffer the same problem so your problems could even be doubled by the wheel balancer!

.......For DIY folk a B@Q brightly coloured tape measure has a thickness of .14mm....and costs nothing. Cut out two lengths to give 2 "rings" which gives a .28 shim. The curvature of the tape and its springiness helps hold it in place and makes it easier to "click" into place. That was our "experimental" version.

Bit of a pain to fit. No pain, no joy!

Makeshift engineering for M-B "quality".
