I have just bought my first Mercedes, I think its fantastic! However I am so very disappointed with the sat nav function. In my last car Saab 9.5 Aero, i had a Kenwood system that had Garmin navigation. It had full post code recognition, TMC and safety camera warnings. The "top of the market" system in the Mercedes is poor to say the least. Can anyone advise me how i can upgrade my fantastic 'new' car?

Persevere with COMAND. The post code is erksome but easily worked with a few extra key presses.

You will have TMC (if you have the correct Nav disc) and if you don't speed you won't need 'Safety' camera warnings!

Keep it OEM

Or you could get a TomTom & keep the safety cameras and also get free updates through the map share system. No need for out of date maps then.

Renault have now joined Toyota in offering an in-dash unit that uses a TomTom,
I think this is how future sat navs will go & systems like COMAND that are cumbersome to adapt & update have had their day.

Thanks for that. How do I know if I have the right disc for TMC?

If you go to the page on COMAND where TMC is an option and press the associated button it'll soon tell you. Pop the disc out and check the version number, I think TMC came in with version 8 of COMAND APS but others will know better. You could also go to www.comandonline.co.uk and ask them, they're recommended on here and are very good at answering queries.

Yeah mine's 4.2 I think, so I'm in the same boat. The comand.co.uk blokes are good, I'll be getting my update from them when I get round to it. I think they offer discounts to members of certain forums (mbclub.co.uk I think is one of them) and they have an advert in Mercedes Enthusiast magazine with an offer code too.

I'll be steering clear of eBay a I want a guranteed genuine copy though I'm sure there must be genuine ones for sale (eg the 07/08 disc after someone's got the 08/09 one)

I have TMC on comand, its crap. seems to only have major roads information for traffic, and you caznt listen to the radio as it self tunes to Classic FM for the TMC codes

Really rubbish...

Luckily that is only on the older COMAND...

COMAND-APS has two tuners, one permanently tuned for TMC the second free for whatever floats your boat

But the older Bosch 2 units have 2 tuners,, I have not tried a TMC disc yet, there is nothing in the book about not being able to use other radio stations

Im sure you're right Malcolm, I only vaguely remember that some units could only receive one radio broadcast at a time

That makes much more sense - I assumed it'd work similarly to the way the TA announcements do. I listen to AM stations and I still get them coming through.

TMC is a sub code on the Classic FM signal, not sure hwy your comand requires you to listen to it though as you shouldn't have to. There will be a rx'er in the comand for the TMC and the normal RDS receivers for the radio.
In the CLS & E TMC came in with Version 5.0
