Hi,
brand new in here having just bought a shiny xdemo clk320 with sat nav. Can anyone tell me why I can't put the whole of a psotcode into the destination for sat nav. I can put 3 quaters of it in but then it dosn't let me complete it. I then have to choose a road from a selection so I might as well just have put the road in in the first place. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

COMAND, Mercedes Sat Nav does not allow full postcode entry, just the first 5 digits. You then as you quite rightly say, select from a list.

It's still a bit dumb, though. Better than my 5 yr old system which doesn't support postcodes at all. I have always wondered why not. From a software point of view it's a piece of cake. Maybe it's to save space on the disc.

yours might not do postcodes but I bet it dosen't always tell you (voice) to take the first left at a roundabout, regardless of which exit it actually shows to take! mine also tells me to turn left at a roundabout just after I've taken it. I also have a manual telling me how to use the traffic management system but can't get the system to operate it!.........guess as I'm new to merc and this forum I'll have to start reading all the threads on sat nav and get used to merc "quirks"!

Nicky's right - For a company that is supposed to 'push the boundaries' in automobile technosupremacy they really are trailing the planet when it comes to guidence systems !!... The Japs have got it licked (no surprise there!!)

A Tom Tom unit will give you better results, and works as a handfree unit to your phone................

Yes the Tom Tom is more advanced - will also show points of interest AKA speed cameras but really does not look cool in a nice expensive car - with a power cable trailing across the dashboard and the ugly windscreen mount. Also read that large numbers are now being stolen since just the mount usually indicates a £500 accessory on the parcel shelf/in the glovebox.

already have command installed so using a tom tom seems a bit ott. shame, rest of the car is great. as it's a software issue, perhaps things will improve in the future.

TMC (traffic message cahnnel)- traffic avoidance is not yet active in the UK. Mercedes do not have a launch date as of yet, but indicate that it will be towards the end of this year. An updated navigation disk will be required that contains the ITIS TMC codes. Apparently there are some issues that is delaying the introduction date resulting in the system not being fully complient to the specification.

I also get told to turn left at roundabouts after i have turned left. Also on double roundabouts, it is just not quick enough and i find that i have gone through the second roundabout before the first instruction!!!! (C - Classs w203)

The reason that SAT Nav does not work properly is that the Postcode is a British sort of thing, and does not accord with European or US versions.

Having been in the EU, EC and EEC for 40 years you would have throught that instead of straight bananas, they could have invented a 25 country wide postal coding system... so that everybody could sing from the same hymn sheet

TMC will be with us early next year, in Mercedes COMAND that is.

and when using the postcode, put in the first 5 figures then bring up the map option and you will be in the location. some street names dont come up on the options list but are marked. the idea is that if you know the whole postcode, you will know the streetname. if you know only part of it then you will need the map. you will find it is the people who make these things who think like that. to make it easier for all of us......mayebs one day, they may actually ask one of us what we need instead of letting the consumer want what we tell them?
