Tomtom maps are actually teleatlas, so it should be as good as anything else. Also, tomtom is dutch so theres no reason to think that UK should be any better than Eurpoe. If you're happy with the UK version, the extra maps should be fine. I know there are holes in the UK map, so as with the UK version , always cross check the info with a real map if you can. The damn thing cost me 1 hour on thursday with an incorrectly spelled streetname. I presume the Merc one would have done the same though, as its teleatlas too.

mine is navteq. its fab. hasnt a clue where the bingly by-pass is tho. makes me laugh as it recalculates and attemptes to get you to make a left onto the rail line.

i would certainly look into anyhting with the same software that my merc has as i am very impressed with it. i would think you really need to get the most up to date version for the best working.

will any of these firms lend you one for a bit to compare?

Use TT3 with my ipaq pda all the time in Uk and on continent, not perfect as with all systems but I be lost without it (no pun intended).
My father in law has purpose built in Sat Nav in his Beemer and prefers mine anytime (and what a difference in price) bought mine of an auction site and the software is readily available (cheap) if you look hard enough. Also it has the added advantage in this country anyway, of speed camera database.

Went ahead and purchased Navman 630. Only used 2 or 3 times so far but must admit I'm impressed. Next week I'm in France and will put it to good use and will report back

Recently purchased the newly released Navman ICN635 for my W202/C280 Elegance sedan, just drove from Brisbane to Sydney & return ( 2450km) taking a varied route with points of interest along the way guided by a nicely modulated English girls voice, great piece of tech. The Navman that is, couldn't fault it but do recommend spending lots of time preparing your trip in sequence.
The C280 achieved fuel economy of 10.057 litres per 100km(28.100 mpg) around town it drops to 12.34 l p 100(22.88 mpg) which is rather good for a powerful 145kw V6.The car is just run in at 85,000km.I use Shell Optimax 98 octane that costs an average of $A1.04 a litre in this state & in NSW around 5 cents more(no sales tax on petrol in Q'land)

I am using a Pioneer Avic-X1, admit £1.5k is expensive but it does everything including all A/V (DVD, mp3 ect) and screens conected in the rear. Maps (on DVD so europe is included) are very accurate and has a built in gyro so when going through tunnels or built up areas and sat signal is lost it does its own calculation and is spot on!

Also fits well in my single din 2001 W210 E-Class as screen is motorised, installed myself in about 3 hrs no problems very happy with it :)

I unfortunately paid up for Command APS for my E270 CDI. Unfortunately only because it cost me £1950. Other than that, it is brilliant. TMS still not workign though! The one problem is that if i take a detour because of traffic jam or some thing, it keeps trying to put me back on the same road. Only after substantial distance away from the original route it re-calculates a different route. Then it is brilliant again. I dont seems to find a way of telling it to avoind any particular route. Putting detour on the map does not seem to make any different. On balance, brilliant! OK under tunnel as well.

I am thinking about one of these units myself :) But as usual they are far too advanced for a shop boy to sell :(

How do you find the screen to use when moving?
How would you rate the sound quality of MP3 playback / does it play them from a DVD?
Are there any niggles outside of the Nava unit?

Iam dumping a Fairly good alpine unit so I am worried about quality issues...

Cheers
