I read today that in Germany Mercedes owners can apply for €3000 subsidy which has been set up to retrofit older diesels i.e.: to upgrade the exhaust filters of older, polluting diesel vehicles, which is the latest effort among German carmakers to avoid inner-city bans.

Presumably under EU laws (and we are still a member) this ought to apply here also? I do wonder however, whether mountains will be moved to create delays and prevent UK from taking the benefits so that later we'll be outside the rules?

Mind you, with all the currency changes over the last three years €3K is apparently only worth £2,766 and with the Trump war in progress over the last week it's liable to fall even more so if this technical upgrade is made available here, UK motorists applying will probably have to cough up around a grand to get any benefits!

Because the Manufacturer (Mercedes) is offering the subsidy. Under EU laws, generally customers should be treated the same.

Not sure that's a 'subsidy' in terms of the law. It's quite OK for suppliers to offer different prices, sales offers, inducements and the like in different local markets.
