The alloys on my C220 are a disgrace. Anyone know where you can pick up decent alloys from scrap cars?

Regards

Most that you'll be able to get from fleabay/scrappers will be damaged to some extent. Have a word with a refub company. Cost should be similar and you'll end up with perfect wheels.

I had the same problem with my W203.

I found that unrefurbished alloys on eBay were far from perfect, with scope for misdescription. I recommend that you do not buy without seeing first or else buy and then pay on collection. Sometimes people refurbish their wheels and then sell them on eBay so it is worth looking there first but I would still recommend that you see them before paying.

I had my wheels refurbished by Diamond Wheels of Stockport. They have tyre-fitting equipment and powder-coating booths (not spray=painting) so they will turn the car around in a day if one leaves it with them. The finish is very close to the original MB lacquered metal effect and the whole problem of corrosion just goes away. There are probably similarly equipped refurbishment specialists in every area of the country.

With lacquered wheels, the balance weights should be either 'stick ons' (stuck to the inside of the wheel) or clipped to the inside rim of the wheels. Clipping the weights to the outside rim will crack the lacquer and allow the ingress of moisture, causing corrosion. New Mercs always have the weights on the inside. Tyre fitters say that clipping to the outside rim gives a finer balance but I haven't noticed any difference at motorway speeds. With powder-coated wheels, it makes little difference but the wheel looks smarter and more like an MB wheel with the weights on the inside and out of sight.

Once the wheels are balanced on my car I normally take the weights off and stick them to the nearest spoke on the inside, so that they cannot be seen,,though I have yet to do this to my current wheels
