Came out yesterday morning to find one of my tyres has a screw through the side wall so obviously non repairable.
My question is and it seems quite controversial is that will it be okay changing just 1 tyre it’s on the rear unfortunately on my W211 I have about 6mm tread on the other tyre so the difference is 2mm (new one on 8mm)
I think its a bit pointless replacing both rear tyres can I get away with swapping the fronts to the rears and the rears to the front so the difference isn’t on the driven axel? Or would I be fine with just leaving it on the back?

I usually replace tyres in pairs as you're suggesting, but as the other rear tyre is as new as you say, I think I'd just replace the one ...

Should be ok Adam.
thanks!
I thought it would be just wanted to double check it’s not going to put any excessive wear on anything

I would do usually but they’re not very old but as I say the other tyre is on 6mm.
Just wanted to double check just in case I’m not endangering any components.

I’d just change one, done it many times and not had an issue.

I would make sure that you get the same brand and type as replacement. Years ago, I mixed brands on the front of a BMW and it tried to kill me several times in the wet weather!

If you’ve got 6mm should be Absolutely fine, they are not cheap items.

I would agonise over the same decision but in your circumstances I would only get one new tyre on this occasion.
Make sure it’s the same make etc though

That's a difficult one, a new tyre has 7mm and yours have 6mm left, you are actually talking about 2mm in diameter. Mmmm........I think I would go for the two tyres and Fleabay the other 6mm tyre. I know 1mm isn't much but in the back of my head I would be mindful of what the effect of two different sized wheels would be having on the diff  Difficult one that :(

I think I’m gonna replace the one but swap it round to the non driven axel. Besides when the other tyre gets worn down I’ll replace both anyway.

Good plan, a lot of us can't do that with staggered wheel sizes

This was my general thinking! It’s not that I’m a cheapskate it’s more the fact I’m one of those people that’s hates being wasteful! Especially if I’ve still got about 80% life still on the other tyre

2mm over the diameter of a wheel/tyre combination is a small percentage.
For example 225/45/17 has a diameter of 634mm 2mm is only 0.3% so inconsequential.

The difference in radius is bugger all so don't worry about it! You would probably get a bigger difference by having the tyre pressures unequal. Yes there would be a difference between the tyres in clearing water but that's not going to have much of an effect unless the ciircumstances are extreme.
