Hi

I recently had my first service done for my 203 at MB Nottingham, the service was ok, but they came out with a list of things that need to be changed and I wanted to know what really needs to be changed and what can wait:

-Advice coolant replacement due(milage is 165K)
-Front suspension thrust arm bushes split
-Auxillary drive belt cracking
-Front brake discs distorted

Cheers

Joe

Most garages are pretty good at advising what you need and what can wait - have you asked them? If they haven't said it needs doing immediately then it can wait and its more of a general 'heads up - these are things that are going to crop up in the nearish future'' list. If it were critical I they'd have been more forceful about it.
Whether they can wait is a decision that can only really be made by you with their advice. After all, most of us will have some level of these faults, but without seeing it we can't really advise how far gone they really are. The garage is best placed for that.

However,
Traditionally disks are replaced with pads - how worn are your pads and are you getting shake on braking? If no shake, wait until you replace the pads.
Coolant - when was it last changed? Its a cheap enough job and can avoid problems - I'd probably have this done before winter, if only to refresh the antifreeze. This seems to be a regular service item now, every 4 years or so along with brake fluid every 2. I guess its a green thing.

Suspension thrust arm bushes - don't know much about these but depending on cost and available cash - I'd put it on the things to do within the next year list. Is it an MOT failure item?

Drive belt - HOw bad are the cracks. Slight cracking or signs of impending failure? If its on the way out, I'd change it. Much better than it snapping on a dark night in the snow. But chances are it will last for years yet.

Could not agree more. Belts usually last well and don't cost a huge amount of money. If it looks worn and you squeeze a few more months out of it, you will not have saved much.

If it fails on a wet Friday night in the p*ss*ng rain, you won't forgive yourself.

If it was mine, I would change it.

My fan belt broke and split a hose for the power steering pump - Hydaulic fluid all over the place, and a much more expensive repair

It broke one day before it was due to go in for a service
