I own a 1999 ML270 automatic. For several reasons I had a service done 5400 miles before the service was due. I now need to reset the service indicator.

I have the owners manual and followed the instructions :-
"Turn Key to position '2' and immediately press Button '1' (on the instrument display) twice quickly.
The service miles will appear on the display
Within 10 secs of doing this turn key back to position '0' (off)
Press button '1' again and hold whilst turning key back to position '2'
Keep the button pressed until you hear a sound signal (about 10secs)"

Easy.... and at the first stage the (spanner) 5,400 was displayed but it is still being displayed despite what amounts to about an hour of trying to reset things. I have checked the discsussion forums and tried what everything. Has anyone ever had the service miles "jam on"?

If no one can help I suppose the next step is off to a dealer.

This is what happen to me, but I am not sure what solved, but try:

1) make sure all the doors are closed when resetting.
2) when turning to position 2 try turning the full ignition so the car starts.
3) It worked on the 4th time, after the 2nd attempt I left the car and tried the next day and worked after the 2nd attempt again.

Regards,

Hi Mark
I've done mine a few times now, thought I was getting good till last week when I sat in drivers seat for half hour with owners manual on my knee reading meticulously through the reset procedure, got it in the end, motor went in to submission mode and allowed the reset.

Kevin

PS I said that I would send you the pic's of the servo motor but could only send a PM with out pic's, so I tagged these on

I have had issues here too. I think it comes down to following the instructions to the letter - for instance, the part "within 10 seconds of doing this, turn key back to position "0". Make sure you go all the way back to the "take key out" position and not just the "off" or No. 1 position.
I have always managed to get it to work even if I have had a few goes on occasion.

Try this:
Switch ignition ON and immediately press button to left of speedometer TWICE.
Switch ignition OFF.
Press and HOLD button to left of speedo while switching ignition ON.
After 10 seconds the new interval will appear in the display accompanied by a beep THEN release the button.
Switch engine OFF
Cross fingers!

Where is the variation in what you do compared to Albi's post?

Thanks for the comments everyone. My problem has been solved. The engine on my ML cut out 200 miles away from home in the middle of nowhere. It restarted after 20 minutes or so. Eventually the vehicle was transported back to my local MB main dealer garage who put the car through a full diagnostic. I was advised that the number one cause of the engine cutting out was the immobiliser which had not been communicating correctly. This was duly replaced – ouch. The service indicator was then re-set.

Unfortunately, after 12 miles further on the engine cut out again (while turning across a dual carriageway) in exactly the same manner as before. Back to the MB garage – second reason (!) for the engine cutting out was the crankshaft position indicator. Duly replaced (no labour cost !) and the vehicle now runs well - apart from starting from hot which is the subject of another posting / cry for help.
