Gave my E211 in for service/MOT. MOT failed because of a fractured spring. Service plus have asked me to pay for 20% of the materials and 50% of the labour charge. Is that reasonable? Thanks in advance.

I quote from my service plus contract :-
"Service Plus is the ultimate peace of mind. As well as the service cover described above (all routine maintenance inc labour, parts and lubricants) Service Plus covers you for all wear and tear repairs such as bulbs, brakes, clutch or anything else that might be considered normal wear and tear. If your car is over 3 years old you're covered for your annual MOT test AND REPAIRS. "

Can't see how they can ask you to pay.

Totally unreasonable!!

Quote your contract to them, speak directly with Service Plus not the dealer.

In addition to PeterCLK's quote is "any works required to maintain the car in a safe and reliable condition"

Cheeky buggers. It's outrageous that they even asked you - how is that "peace of mind"?

They might get 80% discount on the parts price (seriously, I used to work for a car manufacturer and we could buy most thing at 62.5% off) and they may well get a 50% discount on the labour rate (all fleet maint companies get big discounts).

Anyway, surely springs on a "quality" car like a Mercedes should last many years?

I had Renault replace broken springs FOC on my wife's Clio a few years ago when it was 4yrs old - and that was in the days of 1 yr warranty

The A-Classs 140 has a service plus contract on it, and it was the best piece of advice taken.

This year, it needed a new gearbox, new steering rack, new SRS sensor, new brakes (and a few other 'little' items). Mercedes Germany asked for a 50% contribution to the gearbox, but upon challenge, they were asking Mercedes UK for a 50% contribution as they sold the car, just the cheeky buggers tried it on to see if I would pay!

Springs/Coils - poor quality on the M-Class, so would assume it would be the same on other models, and they are expensive to replace, replaced all 4 shocks and back 2 springs last year, MOT failure! The design of them, as I was advised, is poor, as they dont 'turn up' the ends, allowing for a pressure fracture point, which is exactly what both did, fractured on the end point of the spring which comes into contact with the lower rung!

in a word - NO its not.
I think the phrase I would use, being a Yorkshireman is "Bugger off" but you need to pick your own local expression. :)

To be fair, the dealer did say that they would try to to get me out of paying by putting in a 'goodwill' claim. I mentioned that I also have a warranty with warranty direct. They took the paperwork and made some calls and then told me that warranty direct had agreed to pay the rest. I have to pay a £25 excess. I guess it was a good result eventually.

Mmm. Still, your Service Plus should have covered the total bill.

MB are turning the screws on this and people realy should stand their ground..

I have to say that you're easily pleased - I'd probably have have told the dealer to feck off for even calling and asking me.

I simply don't see in what way ServicePlus shouldn't cover the whole cost. OK, they might say a spring isn't wear and tear (but I bet if one failed in warranty then MB would say it was a wear and tear item), but in any event if it's a feature of Service Plus that it includes any work necessary to get you through the MOT.
