Can anyone advise me on a decent place to get my 1988 190E serviced in or near Brighton ?

Ive just got the car and would like to find out what sort of nick its in (It looks great from the outside and drives like a dream!) - what is the best service to ask for?

Is it worth getting this age car regually serviced or should I just change the oil and filters?

I hope you can help - Im really impressed with this car so far.

A lot of people who arent into Mercs would say that, whats the point of getting a 14 year old car regularly serviced. However we all know that a properly looked after Merc will outlive most other cars on the road, especially the slightly older types like ours.

I would recommend a full service as a good point to start at, but make sure you take it to someone who has at least some knowledge of mercedes, as i wouldbt be able to sleep if i handed mine to somewhere like a Lex Autocentre, which are used to servicing Mondeo's like a conveyor belt.

I cant recommend one down near you, but im sure an internet search, or someone else on here will be able to tell you.

Well done on the new purchase!

Thanks Matt

- ive found a place who specialise in BMW and Merc servicing and they say they will do a full service for £200 - bit better than the £450 from the Main dealer!

Is this a fair price for a service and what should I expect for this ?

Thanks

I jim, yeah i know what you mean about the price of dealers!!!

For a full service i would imagine....

Plugs
Leads
Oil Change
Oil, Air and Fuel Filter change
Auto box oil change, including the converter
Back axle oil check and renewal
Brakes All round
Check of all running gear.

They are the basics that i would imagine will be included. Your best bet is to get a service checklist from the garage to see what they actually do. Andy Gale would also be able to tell you if anything more / less is included.

cheers

You should've started a new thread for your issue.

I assume by 'the fan sounds really loud' you mean the turbo charger is blowing hard, if so suspect a split boost side intake duct or split intercooler.

As suggested above with the exception of the plug leads which are usually OK and quite expensive to replace with OEM quality. I would also clean the rotor arm and distributor cap contacts, check the power steering fluid level and poly V belt for wear and tension. Depending on when they were done last and type --coolant/antifreeze mix----and brake fluid. It might not be a bad idea to get it MOT tested which will check all the steering and supension ball joints are OK and the exhaust/catalytic converter [ 88 maybe not fitted??]are working with no leaks.

Oil and filter change 6,000 mile interval

Autogearbox fluid and filter 36,000 miles

Fuel filter the same. 36k

Air filter -depends on conditions but 18-24,000miles

Brake pads last about 12,000-18,000 miles dependent on use.

back axle oil 50,000- 72,000 miles but many never get changed unless they leak

poly V belt 36,000miles unless damaged
