Is there a link to a rough service costs guide? If a car has a full service history is it worth keeping the stamps up to date? I would be happy to do an oil service to save money, but I wouldn't be able to do things like transmission oil changes. If I did the minor service myself would that look a bit odd in the cars history.

I'm also looking for an example of a service book to see what should be done and when.

This one seems to be helpful.

You would need to give details of your car, I’m using Tapatalk so I cannot see which car.

Mercedes use digital records nowadays but not sure when this started.

The first service on my previous car an E300 Hybrid was around £300 from main dealership but the costs can vary dramatically depending on car, mileage and which service is due.

Taking to a Mercedes specialist will cost less and there are plenty of well recommended ones so give your location as well.

Lots of variables to consider , how old is the car , what is the car , how long are you planning on keeping the car , do you have a recommended main dealer or indy locally / how deep are your pockets.

this was a hypothetical, so looking at something 6-7 years with around 70-80k miles. For a C350 CDI, I'm in the Gloucestershire area so probably a good idea to see if there are any garages that service MB.

Once a car gets to a certain age then a full SH becomes less of a deal breaker , unless it is a specialist motor.

IMHO the mileage / condition and a "feel" for the seller are more important as the years and miles pile up onto a used car.

Even at the point of trading it in then you will only be offered minimum book price anyway regardless of history.

When i traded in my 10 year old Saab it made no difference the fact it had the book fully stamped and it was the same with the wifes Scenic , bottom book and that was it. So now i do all the servicing myself and save a fortune , the full service kit for her Juke including new wipers is less than £100 and will take me no more than two hours to complete and i know it is getting done correctly. I serviced the daughter 107 last week for less than £50 , oil + air filters + oil and a set of plugs.

Thanks for the advice. My plan is to find something that I like and can keep for a long while. I used to enjoy running through basic services on my previous cars, but that is going back 14 years. Some of the other oils I wouldn't know where to start i.e. transmissions.

Capra, as others have said Cindi g a reputable MB Indy is worth it’s weight in gold. Their labour rates are half that of main dealer.

As for history, I would prefer to see plentiful evidence of bills, receipts etc. than just main dealer history. Put bluntly I trust (my) Indy far more than my local MB dealer to do a good job. He’s only as good as his last job to every customer (and has just taken on 2 more fitters) whereas MB are as good as their service packages.

So. Evidence that the previous owner(s) have not scrimped on repairs and servicing shows the car has been looked after. Aside from that you have your own opinion of the car as presented and that’s just about as good as you’ll get.

Might be worth keeping an an eye on Mercland stock, they are situated in Nuneaton so not that far, ticks the specialist box and a warranty you can trust

Its worth always noting that when a car is valued or underwritten, where it is serviced bears no relation to the residual value or underwritten value given. The criteria is age, mileage, spec, owners, and recorded service history on time.

Any dealer that tells you your car retains more value for having manufacturers history is not telling the truth. The only extra value is for them when it comes to px because if the mileage is low enough there is a chance they can retail it themselves as a used vehicle.

Hi Steve, thanks for the information. Yes, I wasn't sure if this was worth any extra. I'm going to be on the lookout over the next few months so it is always worth asking these questions before hand.

A full dealer (of any flavour) service history matters to some people, so it might make a particular car more saleable.

There are many enthusiasts who would be comforted knowing the later history in slightly older cars at least was from a known independant Mercedes specialist I would think Steve, I certainly would. I would guess however some folks buying slightly newer cars would be swayed by dealer history?

If I was buying a 3yo car then I would expect Dealer only history.

My car was dealer only until I bought it, I use a local MB specialist so all the history is uploaded to Merc and is all available to view, all merc filters etc when servicing as well

Should all MB specialists upload the service records online?

Yes, they use Xentry (IIRC), I also have the full print off of all the history
