Looks like I will be doing some long distance traveling around the UK next year, and the 230TE which I bought to tun around locally in has 190000 on the clock. I'm very tempted to keep the TE as it owes me next to nothing, and I can gets the dogs in it, and buy a cheap S class and run the miles up on it for very limited depreciation cost.

The car above has a full service history, but non-cold air con.

Should I have bought it?

I would use the TE Tony. Mine has 225,000 on the clock but runs so well that I wouldnt be afraid to use it for high mileages. And I tell you what, it is such a good car that when the engine does expire, I'm going to put a new one in it ! :D

As always, these things are very personal but I would suggest asking yourself two questions:

1 Do I enjoy driving the current car enough to want to spend a lot of time in it?
2 Does fuel consumption matter?

When you start to do high mileages, the "one off" annual costs - insurance, VED - become less relevant and fuel /servicing / consumables (esp tyres) become the key variables in £ per mile.

I would also suggest you avoid Mercs from around '99 to '04 (depending on model changes) because that was the nadir for quality.

Either way, it doesn't sound like a bad choice to have!

Good luck

I would stick with it, just get some good servicing done and keep her in good order. If you enjoy driving it that is. No point in upgrading to 1999-2004 cars, they are less reliable than a good w124.
