This topic has certainly inspired interest and response. If you go to the bigger classic car shows you can see the results of care and attention given by some to their motors albeit at considerable expense. On the subject of always having the latest model I think there is an elment of snobbery but I suppose if these people can afford it then they make their choice. I have a w124 E220 1994 and an E2301997 both of which look as good as when I bought them 12 and 10 years ago respectively. I look after them and if something needs doing then I don't mind spending. I agree with the logic of balancing the depreciation cost against the expense of upkeep on the older motor. I think that gimmickry and gizmos have got to the silly stage. One of my favourite Mercs was the W123 230e straightforward saloon which I had from 1985 to 2004 with no problems. By 1985 it just seemed logical to change proving that our views and consequent decisions are to do with our age at any given time.

Been really enjoying this post.

I would gladly spend anything to keep my car running, I love it to bits, and I never would have thought I could feel this way about a car!

Last night I had a few friends over and my car was parked right up front, so when we ran out of ice I opted to go and get some more. Hopped in a friend's 2000 BMW 325 for the drive... and it was very strange. All the "other" sounds around me. I really can't explain it. My w124 is extremely quiet, no rattles at all, hardly any road noise, slight sound from the motor and that is it. And I guess it's just because I am used to my car but it sounded like the beemer was falling apart. :) hehe

What did strike me as odd was that my car and the BMW were doing roughly the same amount of mileage per year.

So this experience just reassured me about my car, I love it, and won't get rid of it ever. Might drive it a bit less when I buy my R129, but it will still be loved. :)
