I suppose "if you don't know", then you "can't know better".

I think some of these people may have contributed to the survey which highlighted that many UK drivers have no idea of the meaning of the warning lights on their car's instrument panel.

I came across this a few weeks back and though surely it’s staged but no, it’s not all that far from me and it’s genuine!

There’s lots of videos on it and I put several ref plates from the videos into the Dvla tax checker to see which cars have died - so many of them!

I just don’t know what some people have for common sense.

It’s not even that high water in this one, I’ve seen it plenty of times where the water is over that foot bridge

There's a section of road in the North West which dips severely going under a bridge. Pavement on either side of the road is raised level though and this gives a false impression when the dip floods during heavy rain. Catches a good few out.

As a teenager I was a passenger VW Camper that nearly went sailing down the River Cam.

A friend and I were visiting in Cambs, and the person we had gone to see directed us on route to the city which led to a deep ford. Recent heavy rains had made it even deeper. Unfortunately the deepest part of the ford was around a tight corner, and by the time we got a look at it, it was too late to turn back (according to the driver who did not want to have to change gear in such deep water).

As the wheels lost contact with the ground, our bow wave pushed us forward despite the raging flow trying to push us sideways down the river. The water was higher than the windscreen and up to the side windows. Thanks to my talented mate who was driving we made it through unscathed, it was an experience I will never forget.

That’s exactly what I did after watching the video. The BMW was probably the first to die as those N47 engines don’t like water one bit! Friend of mine drove through a puddle in one and it knackered the engine something rotten.

I avoid (or if unavoidable I creep through) even small puddles.

Over several videos there were lots of sun 5yr old cars, jag f pace, lots of bmws, minis, fords, etc. Just imagine the insurance claims.

I’m the same, I swerve for pot holes and puddles, stop and detour for anything worse.

hopefully a lot of insurance claims will be refused as there is an easy route round it so most of these car "deaths" were self inflicted

Many hybrids and electric cars specifically warn against driving through fords. I have an acquaintance who had a Prius, drove through a ford, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and on calling Toyota they advised her to get out of the car immediately as there was a very real risk of fire due to shorting battery cells.

So many of those people in the video don't even stop to assess how deep the water is - as indicated by the bright yellow depth gauge - and I'm surprised that there weren't a few ripped off bumpers with the speed that some hit the water.

Me too. Had to do this on Monday to not blast through a 3 or 4-incher.

Queue the horn blasting from several vehicles behind who are happy to smash it at 40mph plus.

Engine damage aside, risk of loss of control!

The hooting is usually from idiots who have an IQ lower than they believe and cannot stop to think that another’s situation may differ from their own at any given time.

I didn't see any of those that made it without issue testing their brakes to dry them off after they'd crossed.

Since pads are always in contact with discs...is there a need to? It was something I was taught 50 years ago, but from people used to drum brakes all round. But even my first car had discs in 1977.

Yes. SBC systems automatically gently apply the brakes periodically during wet weather in order to dry them off.

Isn't it amazing just how stupid people can be? As for the depth gauge - it is a blatant clue to the situation that so many people just ignored. They got what they deserved I suppose. Hope they learn something about their approach to life and what it means to go through life with one's eyes and brain shut.

Years ago when I went back packing in S.E. Asia and Africa I met with one consulate personally in Birmingham, had emergency contacts set up, consulted with my GP over a few months to ensure I was fully vaccinated for all the places I was visiting, took a medical diagnosis guide with me, various meds and first aid kit that might be needed in an emergency and even more. These days, I believe the correct approach is "Whoop whoop and then go and take a load of class A drugs and dance all night long on the beach". Funny how things change. But no wonder people are dying so often in places like Ko Tao.

Thanks Bandwooddixon- I did not know about electric cars and fords, but had a sneaky suspicion this would be the case. It sounds to me like a flawed design brief from the start, like a boat that doesn't like waves, or something like that. There are going to be some expensive lessons.

There is a ford near us only a short one across a quite fast flowing steam. Most of the time its only a couple of inches, but after rain it can be a couple of feet. The problem then is the vehicle is lifted in the water & carried sideways into the footbridge. We get at least half a dozen a year stuck in the ford.
Its Trescott Ford on the A454 just outside Wolverhampton.
