I am considering buying an SL 320 1999. I have a CLK 320 (03) but no experience with the SL and would be grateful for any views on the good, bad or indifferent points of the SL.
Thank you Speedmaster.
My experience with the SL320 made me think it was a bit too heavy a car for the engine and that it was, therefore, not responsive enough. I certainly felt this after getting back into my CLK 320. Others have said that after two weeks I won't notice the difference. Do you feel that way?
Also, as the cars i am looking at -SL320 and SL 500, with 36 000 miles each- are both 1999 as is yours I wonder if you have experienced any real problems. The comments on this forum make me nervous about them. However, most comments seem to relate to the earler verisons i.e. the early '90s.
We have an SL320 1999 - its really my wifes car - but like all cars you need to get a "good" one. Mke sure its complete with the hard top, wind defelctor, tool kit etc. wich where all standard equipment.
Don't let mileage blind you as you are looking at a mercedes. Low mileage cars can still be dogs. Get history (of course) and also get it checked by someone who understands them.
You will I'm sure have found about the roof checks, and the air conditioning checks, but I would also add that you need to check the steering damper - it leaks and loses effect which makes the steering wolly and indirect.
You mention that a 320 might be a bit underpowered - to be blunt if you want a fast sporty car you are looking at the wrong thing even with the 500.
SL's are fine pootling around country roads top down but are not "sports" cars and are not at there best when driven with spirit. They make a good grand tourer, with the top down a super summer car and with the hard top on a pretty good coupe too.
