The fuel gauge on my 98 SL320 appears to read correct from full to quarter full, then it may drop to zero and the warning light comes on.If I carry on driving it will suddenly go back to quarter full. The previous owner told me about this,he had the tank sensor replaced, still the same.I just live with it and never let it go to quarter, but it would be nice to have a gauge to rely on.Any ideas Merc` buffs?

Some people put some injector cleaner in with the fuel and this can have the effect of cleaning the rheostat, it works for some, other than that its a new float gauge

The only way to be sure is to test your gauge. this is done with a decade box which simulates resistance values that you sensor gives, if the gauge reactes correctly to the values you simulate you now its a faulty sensor. If not you have a cluster or wiring fault.
