Can anyone help? I decided to take my 97 SL out for a winter blast today before the real bad weather, having not taken it out for 6 weeks and I found the red hood operator button is on constantly and the roll bar switch is also constantly illuminated. Nothing at all happens when I try and operate either switch. One other thing -the engine appears to be partially cutting out above 4000 rpm. Ive checked the fuses under the bonnet but don't know where to go from there. The battery did run completely flat last year whilst the hard top was on and the car out of regular action (the boot got left partially open) but I don't remember the switches illuminating when I recharged it. Any ideas?

SL320 hard top/roll var wont move

It would appear your system simply needs reseting, try disconnect the battery for 10 mins. If no ok - dealership trip or someone who has suitable test equipment to reset the computer

If you have an OVP relay, the fuse on top of it could have gone, the relay is in the boot, near the battery, give it a go,and or do what eric says,a reset.

the fuse could effect the running of the engine.

Also check the fuses in the boot near the right hinge.

Hard top problem fixed, still got semi-cutout above 4200rpm

Thanks for the advice - sorted out the roof and roll bar problem - I checked the fuses in the boot which were OK so I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and that did the trick. However I still have a type of cutout problem above 4200rpm, it sounds like an engine protection type cutout, not a misfire, any ideas? I'd assumed it was connected to the previous hard top and roll bar problem and was a safety 'feature', but it is still there.

When you say its cutting out above 4000, I pressume you mean while driving & not just revving in park or neutral, as they do have a rev limit around 4K when out of gear.
