sl 500 starting problems

i have a 1991 sl500 starts and drives for hours on end then when stopped for 5 minutes or so will not start again.The car just turns over and over and will not fire have renewed all leads and ovp problem still there.Have read from other posts on this site this could have something to do with a crank sensor could anyone please tell me if they have had simular problems and where this part is located on the car.where i could purchase one off these and how much.would also greatley appreciate any other advice to this problem as it is very frustrating to have such a beautiful car that is not relaible. thanks wez

Cossie, I do have the same symptom as you, but I know how to fix it. If I'm stating the bleeding obvious here, then I apologise:

My car (1990 500SL) has an (MB) immobiliser fitted. Once you switch the engine off, after about a minute the alarm chirps once, and the indicators flash. This is the immobiliser arming - NOT the alarm. Its a pain in the butt as this means you have to lock and then unlock the car via the key (infrared). Once you've done this the car starts first time.

Could this be your problem? Neither the immobiliser or alarm is mentioned in my owners manuals - it was only the previous owner who mentioned it to me.

Hi

yes does sound like crank sensor it iss located on the near side of the bellhousing and sensor readings are of the starter ring gear
