Good morning all,

Delighted to have procured our first ever MB and now joined the forum.

Having not long picked up our new to us SL350 (2004) we are going through a few minor snags, which as we are within the warranty period, the dealer is sorting one by one....

the most recent one, is leaking hydraulic fluid just above the drivers side window, where the roof meets the windscreen (see very poor picture attached)

I have used the forum search function, but cannot seem to find the info I am looking for e.g. - a repair kit/guide/replacement part number.

Any help the collective and corporate memory can offer will be gratefully received.

Based near Carmarthen in SW Wales (A Scot living in exile)

Welcome - can't help you with the leak sadly.

Do you still have your 07 plate Discovery 3 HSE as well as the SL?

Hi NJSS,

The 07 D3 went some time ago, a great vehicle whilst we had it, but it was time to move on.

Why do you ask?

Likely to be the locking cylinder. Worth checking the lines etc in that area though.

MB part number A2308000872

Lines are permanently attached to the cylinder and go back to the pump, so lots of dismantling to repair, OR some sort of hydraulic coupler may help. Either way, fairly large job.

Hi There , my car is Sept 2007 R230 version and I am having mine fixed right now. I live in Spain but use an extremely good ex merc mechanic. Yes it is the locking cylinder at fault plus a few other cables etc. I'm expecting topay approx 950 €'s including 21% iva [ vat ] . Will confirm part numbers etc. tomorrow. Just one thing had a devil of a job getting the cylinder from merc in Germany. My guy is also nor sure if he can source a new rubber lining just where the drivers window sit. It does not like the fluid that has been dripping onto it and has gone all wrinkly. Anyway will be in touch tomorrow, good luck.

Thank you for the heads up, for clarity (I always like to check I've understood) the part number is for the roof clamp locking cylinder on the right hand side? as opposed to the one that is in the centre of the windscreen above the rear view mirror?

I did the whole "google thing" and have managed to confuse myself. :)

Thank you for the reply, I'd be interested to hear how you go on, what parts were needed etc - plus any photos for ease of identification, I hope to get my car back into the dealer over the next few days, and want to check they have the right parts needed for the job, that way I can enjoy it whilst the UK summer lasts

Sorry Myles no photos.Car is [hopefully being fixed at the moment.I needed only 3 parts
New Roof Lining 371€ inc labour and vat This was always making a noise so you might not need it.
Central cylinder [ there is only one ] 291€ inc labour and vat
Rubber lining for drivers door seal [mine is RHD ]131€ inc labour and parts.
My roof would go up and down but I noticed that it was not flush against the window screen AND then I noticed the dreaded oil leak on the drivers arm rest and seaat , quickly followed by the crinkly rubber seal starting to drop.
Hope you get yours fixed soon

Hi Amos,

Thanks for the really helpful reply, it really is appreciated

I don't suppose you know or have access to the part numbers your mechanic/magician used? I don't know where to start looking.. but suspect I will need a few of the ones you mentioned too (although headlining seems fine -at present)

With regard to the only one central cylinder (I presume you mean the one above the windscreen) where is the oil coming from if it was leaking on the drivers arm rest and seat? I thought there was a clamp/piston or similar directly above the leak as per my picture.

Having stopped the roof "mid cycle" opening, I can confirm that the leak appears to be on the side of the roof itself, along the rubber strip that runs front to back of the hardtop piece itself.

Myles I'm going to the garage tomorrow so I will try and get the parts no's. The cylinder is approx above the rear view mirror. When the roof linning is removed you can see that there is a channel which runs the length of the windscreen , but it seems to me that when it is spewing oil it runs to the weakest spot which is just above the drivers seat window. It only pumps out oil after it has lowered or raised the roof. Not immediatley but as soon as it settles. Hope that helps but anyway will try and have part number for you tomorrow.

Prob a small leak at o ring where pipes connect or a small cyl that's there leaking. Either a DIY or find an independant near you

Hi and thanks for your reply, it is appreciated.

I note you say a leaking "O ring" - but which one/on which MB part - that is the bit I am struggling to ascertain, some say it's the clamp piston above the rear view mirror - yet the leak is above the drivers window, so I remain "confused"

There's 2 pipes and a piston from cyl. Oring on cyl piston or more likely end cap. or leak from seals or fittings where pipes meet cyl

There is only one cylinder there, the leak is probably tracking down on one side. The only way to actually know where the leak is coming from is to remove the panneling and look.

Hi Myles , my roof is now working perfectly with no oil leaks. Still waiting for roof lining[ should be here october time ] but I quite like watching all the clamps and cables moving when the roof operates. Anyway the cylinder number you have is correct for your model and the part number for the rubber over the drivers side is
A2307900698
Good luck and I hope you get it fixed soon.

Thank you for the kind reply and helpful tip.

I'm still trying to find my way around the car, find a decent manual, owners manual etc, so prone to asking questions.
