Just sorted one problem to fix the main problem. I have tried most things to retract the roll bar on my 1996 SL but nothing is working at present. Disconnected the battery for 10 mins, held the roll bar switch up for 10 secs, checked all the fuses, and a bit more. I took it in to the garage this morning because I had heard it could be a fault that needed resetting. But the garage told me that were a few faults on the computer that they erased but the fault for the roll bar stayed on? So I have the report code which reads 122 Limit Switch, S83/1 Roll bar stowed. Does any one know what this means and can it be rectified because I can't put my roof up or down, so at present its not locked down on the rear swing arm. The garage suggested it would take a very long time to take the back seats and covering off to expose the ‘switch’, which they weren’t sure, were it was located. But I have half stripped it down, which took 10mins.
:(Any suggestions ADP

It takes about 30 minutes to take the panels off - I've done this plenty of times - some videos below. The roll bar has a sensor attached to the hydraulic ram (just used for raising lowering as in emergencies it it spring operated) which sounds like it is at fault being S83/1. It's about £50 from memory.

It makes no difference whether it was a 6, 8 or 12 cylinder car - all the MY '96 cars came with the final revision of soft-top ECU.

It was the change in 96, that is why I wanted the VIN to know which of the 3 systems it was

Well the change happened in late '95 for the '96 MY so being a 1996 car I took it as read though you can never be sure I suppose Malcolm!

S83/1 is part A1298207910 - it's on the nearside ram.

Thanks for the link, but is there anything that will show me where the switch is located on the ram and is the number you have listed the part number required?
Thanks for your help

Sorry didn't realise you needed the full Vin. I can't get it until the morning as not at home until then. I will e-mail it then.
Cheers

You'll see it - it's a rather large sensor sticking out of the side of the ram. That's the replacement part number - though you should test the old one first as a matter of course.

I've uploaded it Malcolm in case anyone else wants to refer to it. Basically you just unscrew it :D!

Until the fault code has been reset you're stuck. If the sensor is just on/off then either the wiring is dodgy or the ECU has a problem if it's generating this fault code consistently.
