Hi
Does anyone know if you can simply change the centre star to the distronic version on a genuine grill or do you need to change the entire grill? There are plenty of people selling genuine distronic stars on ebay and I was wondering if I can fit it to a standard grill?

My car does have distronic btw, but I am also trying to track down a distronic sensor and bracket - it looks like someone did not get around to refitting these items after a front end collision I am guessing! If anyone knows where I can get these items it would be useful. Part is A000 540 88 17 for the sensor. There seems to be a difference with the Q numbers at the end - not sure if that makes a difference to the car?
Thanks.

Yes you can buy just the distronic Star and fit this on your existing grill.

Malc, you are a STAR as always! Do you know where I can get a cheap sensor and bracket? I have tried Dronsfield but no luck there. The alternative is to get it removed from the car, at least in star - we tried the other day but did not have factory option. If I can get the car reprogrammed to not see distronic that would be good - just annoying that it keeps coming up with 1 fault (Distronic - visit workshop).

Do a google search "breaking SL600" as it was standard on these.

There are a couple being broken, I have seen them somewhere.

Hi,
I have recently retro fitted Distronic to my CLS55 (w219)
On a R230 the sensor pt. no. will be dependant on exactly what build year you're car is, the earlier cars had the sensor and an ECU for Distronic, whereas the later cars only had the sensor behind the grill star and no ECU.

Hi, yeah I'm aware of that. I have an early car with the separate ecu. I often see the same part number but with q4 at the end and some with q9 at the end like mine and was wondering if there was a difference between the w220 version and r230 version of the sensor.

Malc, I believe they both take A000 540 88 17 on the early cars.

Hi,
The Sensor head A 000 540 88 17 was fitted to 215's and 220's.
I can only imagine that the q4 or the q9 is to indicate slight variations in build data/software etc. I had a similar quandary when looking for my sensor head, but I was told as long as the 11 digit number was the same then there shouldn't be an issue.
If you are replacing yours then can I suggest you buy a new sensor fitting kit (as recommended in WIS) and before removing it measure with feeler gauges the distance between the sensor head and the support bracket to minimise the requirement for aligning it, which can only be done by an MB dealer. This can be expensive as most won't do it without a 4 wheel alignment as the sensor head alignment jig sit on the front wheels.

That is correct, and the only one, I do not know when they changed. I do have some setting up information
