hello everyone,i have a grinding noise from the rear of my 2007 sl,the brakes have been done and the handbrake shoes are ok,the brakes were set up on my copy star so i am assuming ok ,i have changed the gearbox recently so that can be ruled out ,my associate thinks it is the diff but i think it is brake related.you cannot hear the noise when accelerating ,only when you take your foot off,but it is there all the time ,mb pads fitted.the noise sounds like a back plate catching.any comments appreciated,i should mention this is a water damaged car, many thanks, mike.

I would just jack the rear end and turn each wheel in turn, the back plates can get bent, the only other moving thing is the prop shaft

is it posssible it could be a bearing,i will put it on a lift ,take off the wheels and drive it,with the suspension supported, could it have anything to do with the suspension sitting very high, regards mike

Not a bearing or the noise would be a humming,But I am not sure if water would have affected them

Sounds like the handbrake shoes not aligned correctly.

sl grinding noise

hello, jacked up rear end while car on a four post lift and put into drive ,the noise appears to come from the centre carrier so it looks like a second hand propshaft or a repair, have to see which is most economic, anyone had any experience doing this, regards mike.

I wonder how this all fits in with the car being too high at the rear

Hi there, I'm not sure if this is relevant, but when I got too adventurous with my Nissan Navara, and went through some VERY deep water, my prop shaft U/J's failed soon after. This may explain the noises you are experiencing, but I don't think would explain the high ride height. As I have a similar 2007 SL350, I'd be interested in the eventual outcome of your "noises" and strange ride height.
Richard
