Hi How reliable is the system, as I've just watched a video on YouTube on how to close the roof manually and basically it can't be done roadside. The video shows two MB technicians using special tools/ Star etc

The only time mine has stopped there has been a reason such as divider not properly located in the catch. Each time it has allowed me to re-close it (4 years ownership).

I managed to confuse mine when I stopped it half way to clean the windows and it would not go back up or complete going down.
The two small flaps that cover the hinge mechanism when the roof is down became out of position and I had to remove them (3 torx screws if I remember rightly) to then reposition the stubs that they connect to by hand to the correct side of the roof mechanism.
I now make sure I operate the roof from fully up to fully down and vice versa, so something I wont be doing again!
I remember watching the same video and was horrified at the complexity after previously owning an R129 when it could be done at the roadside.

Mine is nearly 4 years old. Gets used regularly - no issues. i had a R172 SLK (in Brisbane Australia where the weather is always good) that was my daily driver for nearly 4 years (open and closed at least 2x / day) - no issues.
