Cars after 2007 should be just clear in the UK, the number are here so you can check on buying

engines up to #2729..30 468933 -- this when the gear is the problem

engines up to #2729..30 759427 -- this when the adjustment solenoids are the problem

engines up to #2729..30 895140 -- this when the adjustment solenoids leak oil

The first two scenarios cause "check engine light", the third is just an oil leak

These are the engine numbers and they should be on the V5 log book, on the SL only fitted after 06-06

Hi Malcom Looking at a clk 350 with the 272 engine the number is

27296030703157

Looking at your above numbers this engine looks a bit suspect? is this so. The car is September 2007.

Many thanks
Terry

Hard to believe that this is a late 2007 car, it certainly looks that way, I wonder if the faults have been attended to.

Many thanks Malcolm for your quick response. This is my dilemma, the link below shows you the car that I am interested in:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201409267734601?atcide=emc-cars-DEC004

but I may err on the side of caution and stay clear as there seems to be no sure way of whether the work has either been carried out or not.

It could be just fine, with 107k miles it must be OK, the faults showed up very early in life.

Terry ask to see the bill for the replacement. An Indie bill would be in the region of £1700-2500, dealer bill would be eye watering. Mine went at 86k miles so you "could" be clear at that mileage but I woudn't trust it unless you know for sure. It's an awful lot of cash to spend on an issue you are now aware of.

Hi Pete, What actually went on yours, good idea to ask to look at the bill, only trouble it's a long way to go and have a look (110 miles). Don't think the dealer would be happy if I asked over the phone to read the service history out. Can I ask what it cost to put right on yours.
Many thanks.
Terry.

Terry the actual balance shaft sprocket went on mine, details of the saga below.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=120677&highlight=balance+shaft

Mine was £1,653.24 and was done my MBS. I actually had the car shipped down to them as they were/are experts in this area and were performing the same surgery on 2 others at the time I believe.

Personally having used MBS before I would highly recommend them.

As for asking the dealer I most certainly would and it wouldnt appear in the service history, it would more than likely be a seperate item.
They can scan and send/email the bill should it exist.

Knowing what I know now, I would press them to make sure it's been done unless you have around £1700-£2000 sat in a savings account for when it does go.

Terry this is the most common aspect of repair/replacement needed.

The metal has not been hardened properly by the supplier that provided it to Mercedes.

It should be like ...

Hi Pete

Many thanks for all your comments and help, however I still feel that it is too much of a risk going for it, I would rather wait until a 2008 model comes up that would be well clear of the problems and also not keen on convertibles - but that doesn't distract from the fact that I liked the colour combination. However I have a decent CLK 320 with Pioneer SATNAV and decent wheels on and very high spec. so have decided to keep with what I know.
Thanks for your trouble.

I do have the details somewhere, but from 2007 they must be clear as mine is, it was the idler gears and the balance shaft.

I read 272 engines OK from 468993 (as above).
I read 273 engines OK from 088611

So the 272 Terry asked about above, should be OK.

Note the problems with adjustment solenoids are very trivial, compared to the worn gear scenario.

Thanks Alex, I could not find the 273 break date, my 273 is early 2007 and 121198, the poor guys in the USA got the most of them, but Mercedes was sued over this and forced to pay for all the repairs. MB argued the case when Mercedes said that most were out of warranty by the time the defects came to light.
