My daughter said the same when I decided on the R231 500 over the 63 to avoid ABC, but she is not paying the bills, for the same reason I walked away from an Aston Martin Rapide, lovely car but out of my running pocket with retirement looming!

Mercedes SL500 R231
Strangely I did look at a Rapide before buying the i8 too- similar reason dictated that as a ‘no’

I've had this argument and shopped around far and wide many times over the Years and never have been able to find an insurer who will insure me to drive as an individual.

I can’t even apply my no claims to a second car apparently!
You can’t unfortunately :( when I had 5 cars and 3 bikes they all had their own no claims bonus. Of course any claim on 1 negatively effects all of the others but the 15 years NCB I had on the 911 made no difference when I bought the smart or the Land Rover - 0 NCB

The next business to mine’s owner has one , it burbles past my office once or twice a week with that lovely unmistakable V12 sound...that said as I’ve discussed before it’s others who get the sound benefit- he tells me it’s near silent inside :(

Total garbage isn’t it? I stand corrected on my comment I just checked and the XC90 has 2 years so it is building a bit....

John - contact Hastings Direct and try their multicar policy. They mirror your NCD on one other car - but only one. They were the only Insurer I could find who would do this. Service with HD is hit and miss like all call centre "providers" but some at HD seem to know what they are doing. I'm still unconvinced that NCD has much effect though on the price you finally pay if you shop around though:rolleyes:. Worth a try.

Sorry I meant wife and I have a car each on our own NCB , 3rd car had to be insured without NCB (as you correctly point out )

I think individual insurance would be a much better way of dealing with car insurance, insure the driver and not the car, I would accept limits such as number of cars covered and performance limits etc but then we can pay for upgrades. That way we could buy as many cars as we want.

I’m the main driver on both of mine though Wighty, have been a while - in the past this made sense but that’s causing the issues now

LV will mirror NCDs as well. I used the Smarts NCD on the R230 :)

We currently have four cars on an NFU multi-car policy. We only have 3 cars on it normally, but they weren't bothered about applying NCD from specific cars. E350CDI is more expensive to insure than either Porsche... o_O

I'll just throw this out there, if you're looking for some V8 soft top fun without the worry of ABC or rust that comes with an R230 then you might want to think outside the MB box? The second one is a bit over budget but gives you an idea of what's out there :)

What's that horrid flappy thing on top?

Watch out for dodgy electrics, aircon and failures with the keyless system. Thirsty compared to the R231 and slower but sounds good.

My brother bought an XKR when I bought the R231, he swapped his for a Ford Ranger, I still have mine .

I saw a review (What Car)between a F Type V6 and a R231 Sl400 - compared bang for your buck between the two when buying used cars. The SL won - mainly due to a better ride - I'll see if I can find it and post it here.
