Consensus is don't use after market air filters on a Merc and stick with the OEM filters.....the after market ones have a habit of messing up your MAF and all in all its more trouble than its worth.
I think by After Market people are refering to the oiled cotton free flow jobs.
I've just removed one of those for a Hengst from Euro.
However I have also replaced the filter in the crankcase breather closed loop
system, I bought that from the dealer, partly because I didnt think a factor would stock it.
IMO if it says OEM Quality on the Box and comes from a reputable factors your pretty safe. It really depends wether or not you have a Manufacturer's
Warrenty to consider..

As has been pointed out I mean ditch all thoughts of a k&n style filter and stick with standard filter, either from MB themselves or Euro Car Parts etc.
GSF supplied me with bosch filters at much less than MB quoted.
Dont bother with so called sports filters on a road car, they do have less restriction but that's because they are not very good at filtering, besides that on a petrol engine it is only at full throttle and higher engine speed that any gain in air flow is to be had. Fitting one might take a few hundredths of a second off the 0-60 time and a few thousand miles off the engine life.
