I bought some pre-owned wheels for my car, mainly for the tyres and also to allow me to have mine refurbished when they're off the car.

I tried to fit one of the rear wheels, but when I did the bolts up the wheel was flopping about and I couldn't get the bolts to tighten any more.

The ET for the wheels is 20 for the front and 18 for the rear. Wheel sizes are 17 x 8.5 and 17 x 9.5 respectively.

I have checked on http://www.mercedeswheels.net/ and they are nearly right.

My questions are: -
Are they the wrong size?
Do I need things called spacers?
Do I need shorter bolts?
Am I a bozo?
What can I do, should I just get the tyres put onto my wheels?

I don't know. I need advice from you experts.

Have you bought wheels with 14mm bolt holes as your car uses 12mm

What were the wheels you bought.

HI Malcolm,

It just seems as if the bolts are too long and you can't tighten them up enough, if that's possible.

Helen.

Place the bolt into the wheel, when fully through there should be 20mm of thread coming out of the rear of the wheel

I finally found time to measure the bolts today and I have about 31mm poking through the wheel. I take it from that measurement that they are too long and I need something shorter.

I haven't seen a bolt like this before. It has a kind of collar and an extension to be able to undo it.

The bolts that you have sound like the standard bolts that were supplied originally with the car about 7cm overall, the extension is called a shank. these bolt are no longer supplied, but in any case the threaded part is to long.

You will have to buy some bolts from a wheel shop 12mm and with a shorter threaded part.

Hi, I have a 320 CLK yr 2000 facelift - still in love after all this time! It was fitted with AMG wheels and in the tome that came with the car it said that there are 'short' bolts and 'long' bolts -dependent on the wheel option. If your wheels flop about, I'd guess you need certainly short-er bolts. Dont for goodness sake fit wheel spacers as you may run a serious risk of causing the wheels to foul the bodywork. Hope this helps

I suppose since that's my site that I should answer! Post a pitcure of the wheels first..
