2005 sl350
Hi, I have recently brought a 2005 sl350, I drove it fine for about 2 hours after I got it and parked it up for a few days. Now when I try start it, it won't turn over. I put the key in the ignition lights come on the entertainment screen comes on and the fan in the engine comes on and that's it. No tick over, nothing?

I checked fuses, I can't seem to see any blown ones, I tried charging the battery but still nothing???

Any ideas?

Liam

Have you tried the front battery under the bonnet, that is the starter battery

If you sure that the battery is not dead, I think you have to check the starter and starter's solenoid. This kind of issues usually come from the solenoid.

I think it will be the front battery..£80ish from MB. I had the exact same problem. Iv often wondered tho...if you have long enough jump leads...can you jump start the front battery from the rear one?

You must not jump from the front one, not a good idea to jump anyway.

You are keeping your foot on the brake when starting

I tried jumping the front battery with the rear battery, mind you the leads only just reached so maybe connection wasn't good enough. I also tried jumping front battery off my dads van but it didn't work.
Do you think I should buy a new battery, and would a battery problem cause the car not to make any ignition noise like your average car dying trying to start

I put the key in the ignition lights come on the entertainment screen comes on and the fan in the engine comes on and that's it.

Should the engine fan be coming on with a cold engine?

How would I go about checking these? I wouldn't know where to find them.

If the engine fan comes on at full power then the engine ECU has a fault, could be a blown fuse.

These engine fans are held off by the engine management, should all or part of the engine ECU not get any power then the fan will be on, so this is why it will not start,,, there are some fuses and relays for this, and hopefully this will be the problem.

Have you tried to jump the car

Tried to jump start it off another vehicle with no luck, I will check all the fuses again, also could it be one of the black or yellow square fuses? Bear with my lack of mechanical knowledge ha

Smart + others :)
Sounds like either the engine ecu has no power or the ecu has gone down. Is the engine fan running full blast??

Do not try again jump starting as this is not the problem.

It could be one of the Maxi fuses or a relay, the fuses could be listed in the fuse chart that came with the car, this is all heavy stuff like 40 amp and beyond

I have a feeling that this has been jump started with the key turned to ignition.

For checking starter and solenoid you have to go to a repair shop or a technician. But this might be the last solution, as television said it seems ECU fault. Also when you try to jump start you have to be sure of the quality of jump wires, even an small damage in clamps or wires might lead to failure.

If the fan is still running then a fault in the ECU or a fuse going to it
