I have a sl500 version 230.

The car has been parked for some time and I had to recharge the battery. When connecting the battery the fuse for the central locking broke and I?m unable to open the fond to the fuse box in the back of the car. I strangely believe that Mercedes has made a mistake by placing a fuse in the locked back fond area which is only accessible if the fuse is not broken.

If you can answer how to unlock the fond to get access you will not find this question strange.

I have tried with the key in the front compartment as suggested in the instuction manual but this does not work

is there no locking release near the handle at the rear...under the lip? there has to be someway to manuallly open this lock as even MB would not be able to access this area if there isnt.

If the central locking fuse is gone, you won't be able to open it with remote boot button or the button on the dash.

  • Put the key in the boot lock.
  • Turn key anti-clockwise fully
  • Allow to return to vertical position
  • Remove key
  • Press button to open
This is for the R129, but pretty sure 230 is fairly similar.

Thanks for your answer, in fact its not the boot but the locker room behind the seat. There is ome with the ce charger and another one with the fuses.
Its the comparment with the fuses behind the passenger seat. I'm stuk and if no answer I look forward to see how MB will handle this.

Usually if MB has a locked area, they provide a mechanical means of opening them in case of vacuum failure. For doors, boot, pockets etc. mechanical locks (open with key) For Fuel door, theres a thingy inside the boot. For the fond, there must be some mechanical means of opening. I would have another look in the manual if I was you steen. The switch/Key in the front compartment is not connected to the fond mechanically.

PS. Maybe your fuse is not gone.
Try a central locking reset.
Press open button on remote. Within 30 secs. put key in ignition and turn to position 2.

Tried this as well. I booked a time week at garage and will let you know what the hell the trick is. Most likely something stupid. Even went up early this morning and disconnected the battery to see this is this somehow allowed for manual intervention.

The manual kindly says that you can not open the fond box with the key...

So back to square 1

Have onother look at the fond box area. Look around where you think it may be clasped. Look for what might be a cover over a lock. Look in your boot also for some kind of release, like that of the fuel door.
