Having problems with my SL500 (R 230)

Was working fine yesterday but I couldn't get into it this morning.

I pressed the 'unlock' button on the remote key fob but nothing happened.

Key batteries were replaced recently so this can't be the problem.

Tried the spare key and had the same result.

Then opened car with skeleton key and the alarm went off.

Put key in ignition and alarm kept on going.

Key will not turn in ignition so can not start car.

Boot battery was replaced recently as well as cantral locking vacuum pump.

Anyone with any ideas regarding what the problem is?

There are several parts to this.

If the last PSE pump failed through water getting in the boot, was the leak attended to, if not water can run down the wiring from under the C pillar and get into the pump again.

What is happening now is that the car is not recognizing the PSE pump, this could also be a rear SAM fault, but normally other silly things happen at the same time when this fails

The car must be plugged back onto STAR and it will say what has happened. Also when connected to STAR the pump can be turned on to test it.

Sorry no easy answer on this one

Thanks for the advice.

What does the acronym SAM stand for and where is it located?

Thinking back, last week I could not start the car for a few minutes and the hazard lights kept flashing and could not be turned off with the switch on the dashboard.

SAM is a signal acquisition module, the unit takes info from all working parts of the car. this is distributed by the CAN bus, A high speed data self check system, when the SAM's get corrupted the car as in this case, the car may not know that a PSE pump is fitted as it cant find it, and therefor cant unlock it.

You have 3 SAM's on the car.

I had two go down on my SL500 a few months back, may be it was the SAM the last time on yours, and they recoded the SAM,but it has failed again, most dealers are not very good with this type of fault

possibly eis, if key is not recognised in ignition it can point to this,
have you checked all fuses,

as malcolm states, common fault is water leak which causes pse to fail, if it does have a leak, was the leak repaired? but usually car is still startable.

I tried starting the car after coming home from work and it started first time.

The only sign of a problem was that the electronics off line message came up on the dash.

These intermittent faults are a real pain to sort out.

The battery in the boot needs a good charge to take away that message, I give mine a charge once a month.

My car also had exactly the same symptoms, gradually got more difficult to unlock/start. Later in the day when it got warmer, the car would start up.
Turned out to be the EIS, Electronic Ignition Switch.

This car is starting though, so do not think it is the EIS and the PSE pump runs individually to that
