Having breakfast this morning at an outside eatery, i noticed a beautiful R230 SL55 'F1' parked opposite. Not seen this before, is it/was it a special sporty edition or something? or a factory (AMG) upgrade? I have Googled but not found much - anyone got one?

How do you know that it was a F1 version, there are more F1 out there than were ever used.
Having lunch one day in Exeter this so called F1 pulled up and parked, he did not like me after I pointed out that it could not be.

Mmm, quick Google brings up factory F1 performance pack, uprated brakes, suspension and F1 front spoiler

Well, if you buy all those bits plus a top speed delimit, you do have one! ;)

There appears to be quite a few for sale, all stating factory option F1 pack. Apart from the front spoiler, nothing obviously different. Composite discs if you look hard enough...

It just had a slightly smaller 'F1' after the 'SL55' badge. So this is a factory option?
Although a badge is just a badge - The previous owner of my car generously added a 'Kompressor' badge to the boot - turns out it doesn't make the lowly 2-litre unit go any faster though!

As earlier there cannot be any more than 8 of them if genuine, but were they changed every season ???

Should be easy to tell, the front spoiler has extra vent grills just in front of the wheels

No one is saying these cars were used as F1 pace cars!

I imagine genuine pace cars would have had many more safety features added, not least the 6 point race harnesses and safety cage?

There was an option to have the F1 performance pack fitted at the factory.

My son in law to be, his Boss had one, it’s the Pace car spec, up rated brakes, suspension, and a tweak or two in the engine department! ;) It didn't have a race harness or Roll cage.

Not 100% sure how complete or correct this is but ....

"The F1 Performance Pack Was Based On The Official FIA Safety Car Of The 2002 Formula 1 Season Consisting Of 19" AMG Twin Spoke Alloys, Limited Slip Differential, Larger Cooling Air Intakes On Re-designed Front Apron, Additional Engine Oil Cooler, Composite Steel Brakes (380mm), Uprated Spring Struts with Firmer Spring and Damper Settings For ABC (Active Body Control) and De-Restricted Top Speed To 186 Mph. "

That is about right, and some of those features became standard for the 65 that was not out back then

Sounds about right, his boss was forever curbing it and having the wheels refurbed. He also, due to driving it like it was stolen all the time, had to replace the discs and pads at massive cost much to his horror, and sold it soon after and bought an Audi A8. Oh well....
