Its hard to know what to say to all this, sure I used to go in via the EIS to do any changes. If the original fault was the plastic gate that caused the problems, this can be replaced for £100

to be honest malcolm, I am at the mercy of MB now. the car is with them and I am guided by their feedback only. I await correspondance from the specialist whom I entrusted the car to, to hear about what they've done, when I get it back and what they're proposing £. Its a common and documented fault, as you know. many threads refer to your comments after all. I just cannot comprehend how something that is known to be a fault on early 230's is now subjected to a software change (applicable to post 07 cars). perhaps a clever way for Mercedes Benz to upsell a further £800 part (as I am told). Appreciate your time.

Certainly I have seen many changes to make the car more expensive to maintain, all the parts that fail like struts, pumps all gone up by over 30% in this last 18 months, parts no longer available on their own and sold with other parts. I hate to think what my SL cost me in real money terms

I really dont see why you should have to pay for a new eis if the new selector they are supplying is not compatible with the old eis

I am lucky to have a good relationship with a very decent specialist locally to me. MercMedics are very good - baffled on this particular occasion but then in fairness, so were MB. Its so frustrating but I absolutely love the car! looked to swapping (which wouldve cost me £3K plus I am sure) so I convince myself that i am still 'up'
They are such lovely cars, real head turners. Bring on the Spring when the roof will be down and all this a distant memory. See you in 15deg+ for some boot leak fun.

I completely agree Andy. I will make a valid point of them changing software to be uncompatible with original parts being either very shortsighted or a rather unfair way of making their customers have to pay more for the maintenance of their vehicles.

spoke with specialist and old ESM had to be broken in order to remove, so our plan to swap out the lever part (from MonoGlobal) is null and void I am afraid. thanks for taking the time to help on this.

Its really nice to find a place where all this can be shared. I will make a point of posting the up's as well as the downs that come with ownership of these fab cars.

So does it look like you will have to have a new eis fitted to it.

They claim that the EIS is needed in order to sync with the new ESM. This in my view is a Mercedes Issue. my priority now is the safe and swift return of my car.
If the newer ESM software doesnt pair with the old EIS then there is no reason why the customer should be charged for a part. I would imagine that something as simple as sale of goods act could be referred to here - items need to be suitable for purpose intended etc....
Merc have already told me that my old ESM starts the car just fine so no issues with my EIS! Lets see what happens this week.
MB Specialists think I would be wise to register a compliant with Mercedes Benz, which will drip down to the Dealer accordingly. this is something they really need to address since ESM faults are not uncommon. Shame that the ESM was broken being removed because Andy could've sorted for less than £300!!

EIS was the issue. Car now completed. just has to go back to the specialists to have dash put back together. MB Gatwick asking £627.84 for EIS +1.6Hrs. This is a 'favour rate' I am told. I have logged a complaint with MB Customer Services 01908 245000 to register what's got on here. See no reason why I should have to pay to replace EIS if its a software update issue. The saga continues... I just want my car back! When I spoke to Specialist on Friday they said that the old ESM had to be broken to remove, to what extent I do not know but probably irrelevant now since the new ESM is fitted along with a new EIS. I just have to hope they will take pity and compromise on the final bill.

i know. The entire situation is laughable except for the possibility of open wallet surgery, courtesy of MB. I think the 1.6hrs is for EIS, ESM and Troubleshooting the issue. either way, I have a lot to contest here. Sure, Will ask for old ESM and liase with you accordingly. Wanna buy it? call it £627.84 and I will deliver for free
 Kidding!!!!!
